I have seen some 1950's appearances of Namor in which he wears a suit or
some sailor duds between breaks fighting crime...does he hang around
some detective agency...? Was this an inspiration?

This was (and still is) a great series it sets a new direction without laying waste to the characters long and rich history.

I really like this series. It's the Sub-Mariner in the world of Oliver Stone's Wall Street.
It shows how diverse themes can be stirred into the superhero genre
without throwing out all the stuff that makes a great superhero
adventure.

In addition to always-incredible artwork, I enjoyed the explanations of Namor's "mood swings" and Namor deciding to front a company. Some of the many things in this series that had me thinking, "of course!"
I really enjoyed the supporting cast that was introduced. The Marrs twins were horrid - which means JB was doing a great job.
Purists will note that Namor's head is not "square-top" as normally depicted at the time, but more normal.

This was a fabulous series and the first issue had me hooked (sorry) from opening page to the end. I love Namor's line about her "hair floating on a warm current". I also loved that splash page with the credits because it shows the curvature of the horizon, a small detail that non one else would have included, great job on that one JB.
I had a t-shirt many years ago that used the image from the firts issue's cover but alas in my many moves it disappeared.

That's one of JB's books that I like a lot (the first year of it mostly). I remember loving the art as a whole when it came out. Now, thanks to this thread, I think that the inking can be "thin" in some places. JB, what did you think of B Wiacek at the inking chores?

For comparison:
Maybe someone has the scan of a splash page with Namor flying from this
vintage (not sure if AF of FF). But when this came out, it was the definitive
Namor for me.
The more rounded head was how John Buscema depicted Namor in his solo
stories. So, I sort of thought: "if it's a solo Namor book, they go with the
round head".

I have been reading some JB runs of certain books. I actually read Namor a couple of weeks ago (just wait for the duotone!) and just finished Alpha Flight yesterday...hmmm..On to WCA?

Have to admit, for me this remains my all-time favorite Byrne run in both
writing and art, everything just perfectly clicked and was over way too
soon.
