I know I will get flack for saying this. I did not like what JB did with the characters on his run on West Coast Avengers. It is the only project he's done that I loathed and hoped it would be forgotten.

Well, no flack from me, only the opposite sentiment. I totally dug JB's run on WCA. I just reread the Vision Quest arc a couple of weeks ago, and I feel it holds up well. I was reading the book from it's inception and was extemely excited when Byrne took over.
In the days of pre-internet, I used to get surprised often by JB popping up where I didn't expect him.
The hawkeye sequence above was very well done. I just wish Byrne's run lasted longer. I dropped this book shortly after he left.
edited for typos and clarification

Any particular reason why?

A few questions for JB.
Did you ask for the West Coast Avengers or were you basically offered the series?
Was the VisionQuest tag on the covers your idea or just something that got tacked on?

Loved everything about this run except the abrupt end to it.
I read the previous issues and they just did not grab me. I've heard the complaints about Vision and Tigra and so on but all I can say is, I was eager for each issue and ready for the next one as soon as I got to the last page.

In my humble opinion, the early issues of this book contained some of John's finest ever artwork, and the entire run contained some of his finest ever stories (I thought Mike Machlan's inking let the book down somewhat after issue #45, until issues #49 and #53+). It was typical Byrne - take a sleeping book and turn it into a noisy, lively, action-packed thriller.
And hey, as a lettering anorak, I have to mention the much-missed Bill Oakley's damn fine work. Tip of the hat to him. I still yearn to letter a John Byrne comic someday...

One of my favourite runs from JB. I'm going to enjoy seeing all these again, not that I cannot see them anytime I want to!
There's so much to enjoy in this run. I particularly liked the US Agent, he was a new character for me.
JB's run was pretty much all I read of this title. Does anybody recommend the pre Byrne issues? Surely they must be due for an Essentials release?

FWIW, other than the limited series and this run, I am unable to recall fondly any of the stories I read. And I would say I read at least half of the issues.

Thanks Kevin.
Just realised, this was #42.
So was this...
Two of the best "Jumping On" issues ever!
Maybe Douglas Adams was onto something?
I don't want to detract from discussing WCA #42 too much but any other classic #42 comics out there?

I loved this run. Thanks Trevor for these thread, we are in for a great ride. And thanks also for JB, of course.
One word of advice for those interested on buying this to read along...buy the original comics, the TPB has pretty bad coloring (IMHO) and doesn't cover the whole run.
