The real question is if incontrovertible evidence is brought by the House, will Senate Republicans actually do the right thing and vote him out or will they continue to back Trump all the way?

You do it because it's the only censure there is, and you also force everyone who votes against impeachment and removal to answer questions about it in their re-elections.

Whichever way the impeachment goes, they can get the evidence recorded for all time. Once he's no longer President, whenever that is, he will have fewer protections against the legal storm of justice that's due, eventually, to head his way.

Also, a question of procedure. Assuming the impossible were to
happen and he was actually removed from office through
impeachment, could he just run again in 2020?

Oof. I never knew that, but it makes sense on second thought.

Assuming the President has not had his full eight years, and assuming a SPECIFIC VOTE is not taken to bar a reelection run, yes. Scary.

Re: the Senate,

Not only did a resolution demanding Trump release information and reports related to the inquiry to congress just pass the Senate, Mitch McConell supported it.  In an interview afterwards, Mitch talked about how he had seen over the summer that payments of aid to Ukraine had been blocked and tried to get an answer from the Trump administration but wasn't given one.

The distancing has begun.  The Republicans, especially those in the Senate, would actually be much better off next year with an incumbent President Pence than with Trump at this point.  And regardless of how stupid they are about policy, they're not stupid about getting re-elected.

Bring his trash out onto the Senate floor and make the Republicans own it!  Expose the garbage and make them defend it!  Of course they won’t back impeachment (If they continue true to form), but the polling shows Trump is wearing on damn near everyone.  And I keep telling anyone who will listen that Trump’s ‘base’ is a loud, unruly and frankly stupid ass bunch of rubes.  And we think there are so many of them because they are on our TV’s every friggin’ day!  If there are so many of those people in America ready to throw it all away in defense of this pestilence then we need to see it and know for sure!

If the persons who voted for Obama (twice) and then turned around and voted for Trump in 2016 really exists...then those voters need to make it known that they are not morons and turn their backs to Trump in 2020.

If you believe in what this country is supposed to stand for you STAND UP to do the right thing and you don’t cower because the politics are not guaranteed!

Everybody who is worried about galvanizing Trump’s support...needs to see this as the opportunity to galvanize the effort to finally rebuke this madness!

According to Article I, Section III of the Constitution Trump could not run again if convicted by the Senate.  The article reads, “Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

They have to have a separate vote to disqualify him from running again, tho.
