"When exactly was Alicia substituted by a Skrull? "
Supposedly it was during the Secret War when Ben, Reed and Johnny were gone if I recall correctly. She then pursues Johnny, once she learns Ben is away, to stay close to the Fantastic Four. That sneak!

Really, Trevor? That doeesn't sound at all like the story I remember JB writing. Guess I should look up those issues again.

I believe that was a retcon. A very stupid retcon.

It came out in the issue with the big skrull reveal. Man I swear Defalco's FF is one of the most devisive topics I have seen on a good message board. People who agree on everything else and get along fine until the topic of Defalco's FF comes up. Then the blood flows.
Me I enjoy his run on the book but can see why others would hate it.
Back to the Avengers West Coast. I truly hated the Goverment people that took the Vision apart more than I have hated any super villian. I wanted Wonder Man to tear them to shreads. The fact the Avengers could not stop them or avenge the Vision was maddening for me.
Thats the sign of a job well done.

DeFalco wrote some of the best Spider-Man of the
post-Stern years, but he seemed totally out of his
depth on the FF. The Alicia/Skrull thing was one of
the worst examples of "comicbook writing" I have
ever seen -- and I have seen some stinkers. It might
be perfectly "realistic" in context for Alicia to turn out
to be a Skrull, but that does not mean it makes for a
good story development.

<<I was offered AWC first, as writer and artist.>>
And as I like to remind everyone... I asked John to do
the book, he accepted, and within the next two weeks I
had those first two issues penciled and scripted on my
desk. Am I exagerating, Pops?

That and the Gwen Stacey rape are by far my two least favorite retcons of all time. I've been rereading those She-Hulk era issues, and I'm having a hard time believing that Alicia is a Skrull. I always liked the Johnny/Alicia romance, and that Skrull thing certainly suck a lot of air out of that particular storyline.

Is there any other word than "wow" that would describe this? For some artists, it seems like it takes two weeks just to get the motivation to start drawing.

Admittedly, I did not read the Sins Past story, and I'm assuming you're referring to it here.
Gwen wasn't raped, was she? I thought the whole problem with this retcon was that she willingly slept with Norman Osborne.

Actually... given that I had just retruned from a 2 week vacation... I beleive that was the first word out of my mouth.

****
AND it was pretty much an exact rip-off of a storyline that ran in LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES a few years earlier where Shrinking Violet was replaced by a shapeshifting Durlan spy who faked falling in love (with Colossal Boy), actually fell in love wiht him, turned on the villians, and became an ally of the team.
