I agree that DU was put out to pasture far too soon.

*****

Retailers ordered about 40,000 of the first issue -- of
DU -- one fifth what they had ordered of NEXT MEN .
Abut 20,000 of the second. Half that of the third. So
we were down to about 10,000 orders and the first
issue hadn't even gone on sale yet.

Tell me how the book was supposed to find an
audience?

Love the timeline and the series. Wish it would return so I could see how it was going to end. I think the thing that disappointed me the most was the introduction of characters and not seeing what they will ever look like. Characters such as Umbra, Blue Scorpion, Dr. Satan, or the Torch of Liberty II. Great series that ended before it really began.

So, Cal (who might not be Cal) was unconcious for
almost a year?

Hey! It's nice to see "my" copy of the Danger Unlimited timeline again. I know it's mine because when I transfered it from paper to email it didn't space properly on the paper so a part of it ran off the page and I replaced it with "(sorry part missing-my words not JB)"

I send a copy of this off to Brendan Howard to see if it could be put in the FAQ. I can't remember if Brendan was the one who asked for it in the first place or not.

Man, this brings back fond memories of that series.  What a positively engaging story that was just getting warmed up.  If I was a praying man, I'd pray for this and NEXT MEN to come back.

I used a lot of JB's technical drawing in DU as reference when practicing drawing that sort of stuff.  Incredible artwork.

I'd love to see DU raise from the dead...

There is nothing like DU in the market place. It's a shame it's not on its 100th issue by now. A whole universe of great characters are just waiting to be brought back.

One thing that always intrigued me about DU was something I read in an interview John gave.  If I'm remembering this right, part of John's plan was for DU to have been a series of 4 issues storylines, the third of which would have been something like the conclusion of "The Last Galactus Story."

That, plus that great final page in Babe 2, has always left me wanting more Danger Unlimited.

Ahhh...  If only I could get 60-page monthly installments of JOHN BYRNE PRESENTS - BABE, DANGER UNLIMITED & NEXT MEN at my LCS...

Ah, DANGER UNLIMITED (sigh)...

JB, how much backstory did you have worked out for the characters we saw in the background but didn't get to meet (the Soldiers of Freedom, etc.)?  How far had the DU universe "gestated" in your head (if that makes any sense)?
