I know there are fans of the 1970s Englehart/Rogers Batman stories on this board so here is my question:

I just finished reading the "Strange Apparitions" tpb and I was surprised by the way the whole Hugo Strange story resolved itself...or rather, didn't resolve itself.  What was it that Rupert Thorne was being haunted by?  Was he just driven crazy with guilt?  Was it a ghost?  Did Hugo Strange really survive?  Was this ever really explained?

Thanks!

Joe

I think Englehart's intention was to leave it vague, but Gerry Conway later did a follow-up.  (Hugo Strange turned out to be alive.)

The way Englehart played it, it was a ghost (I think). But a subsequent
writer brought back Hugo Strange and had Doctor Thirteen (?) debunk the
apparitions, IIRC.

For those wondering who the guy with the flashlight was... :-)

Thanks.

I'm surprised they titled the collection "Strange Apparitions" and even have a new cover with Batman looking at what appears to be the Hugo Strange ghost.  The whole ghost of Hugo Strange thing is really a pretty minor part of the Englehart/Rogers run.
