As you can imagine, I dig this pin-up of the Thing by Kirby.  I was wondering if anyone has a better scan of this shot, and also, if they can give a little background about it.  What issue did it appear in?  What did the rest in the series look like?

In a similar vein, I really like this pin-up JB did of the Thing.  JB-- how many other pin-ups have you done, and which are you most proud of? And for the rest of us, what are your favorite JB pin-ups (and remember, pin-ups, not splash pages or covers)?

Finally, what is the rational behind doing a pin-up?  Is this done to fill out a story that has ended up too short, or is it merely a gesture to the fans?  And why are pin-ups so rare these days?

All comments are appreciated.

Pin-ups aren't rare -- they just go by a different name these days: covers.

Does anyone know where that JB THING art is???  I've been looking for the original art to that piece for 7 or 8 years. I'm also trying to find the JB original art to the INVISIBLE GIRL pin-up (found in the same issue) ...any idea where they are? Thanks :)

Charles - that pin-up is from FF#2. Here's the original (slightly reduced).

Nathan,

In my opinion, a cover's primary purpose is to sell the book by grabbing your attention. Many times the cover shows a scene from the story (but not always, as the Deceptive Cover thread suggests).

A pin-up, as far as I can tell is a bonus for the fan . . . allowing the artist to "show off".

I don't think, in this case, a rose by another name is still a rose.

You just gotta love Kirby. Three toes on the right foot, four on the
left. And not clear about the fingers either. But it's still damn cool.

Now, THAT is a THING! What a pity that version
didn't last. It was gone, for all intents and purposes,
within a couple of issues.

Not too far away from the classic Marvel monsters!

Tis true! Kirby recycled that particular skin texture
many times, to good effect. Here's a couple:

And speaking of recycling. . .

Interesting that you think it's a pity, JB - I think that The Thing's paving stone look is one of the greatest and most distinctive designs in comics...so few artists - aside from Kirby and you of course - could draw it 'right'

I'm interested in seeing what kind of stories they did in AMAZING ADULT
FANTASY... and can you imagine if Marvel started republishing that title
today? I shudder to think of it...

Did this cover make anyone else think of the grocery chain Kroger?

Damn, that is GREAT!

Gotta love the earliest Thing. His look made no doubt why Ben Grimm suffered so....
