And when today's artists DO use several panels on a page, they sometimes STILL layout the page as a two-page spread!  It's very hard to follow when on one page in a typical panel count I read the entire page, but then one page later I'm supposed to read all the top panels, then go back to the left-hand page and read all the middle panels, then go back to the left-hand page and read all the bottom panels.  I just wanna mail the artists a bunch of panel arrows sometimes...

The true master of panel layout, at least to me, is Jim Steranko.

I disagree Eric...Steranko is  fabulous, fabulous comic artist, one of the very best imo, but his panel layouts could often be distracting, I think...in some cases the story came second to the artwork...this never happened with true masters of  storytelling, like Steve Ditko

Edit:to include Eric's point

For me, Will Eisner trumps them all. Even JB and Joe Kubert.

I love the way Mignola lays out his panels and pages. Very economical and
powerful.
