Way back in the dim, dark days of 1994 my small town got its first local comic shop, which meant for the first time I could try several direct-only books. One of them, of course, was JBNM. I picked up 23 for the start of the Power storyline but for some reason didn't get the rest (I can't recall now - may have been because of budget limitations). Anyway, I tried out 2112, loved it, and came back for 27-30. I was blown away and resolved to get the rest of the series someday.
Well, fast forward to 2006 and I'm finally getting around to it! Here's my dilemma - I've found all the issues I was missing for some very inexpensive prices, except for #21. I've looked at some online sites, and frankly I'm not eager to pay the prices they're asking right now. Doubtless I'll pick it up at some point, but I'd just as soon not drop that much money on it for at least a few months.
Here's my question - how badly will it effect my reading of the story to skip that one issue? I'm sure I'll be able to follow along with the story easily enough - after all, I was able to enjoy Lies after having only read JBNM 23 and 2112. But will I feel like I've missed out on something completely earth-shaking and start kicking myself for reading 22 before 21?

E-mail your postal address to tgiberson@rogers.com. If you don't mind waiting a week or so, I'll mail you my copy of #21.

John Byrne books are made so that any issue can be a jumping-on point plus there's a recap page at the beginning of each issue. I'd say that if you don't expect to get 21 in the near future, just go ahead and read the others then read 21 when you can find it. However, since Trevor has made that nice offer, you may as well wait a week!

Matthew,
I'm in a similar dilemma, but I need a few more books of Next Men:
20-30 (except for issue 24 and 25). Like yourself, I'm not in a position to
shell out the bib bucks for #21--or, unfortunately, any of the others.
Worse still--no one in Vancouver, B.C. even HAS them! (Yes, I've checked
all the local shops--even some outside of my city).
Congrats on scoring the #21 here. It commands the most $$$ on eBay
and such. I've resorted to eBay for 2112. Once I've read that, I'll continue
reading from 11-19. Hopefully by then I'll have acquired the other
issues!

Dang, I have literally boxes of these issues,
including 21. I'd be happy to help you guys out, but I
have no idea where they landed after the move!

Pretty important. No, very important. So
naturally, DarkHorse left it out. "Oh -- you wanted that
included?"
Anyway -- hold off for a bit. The NEXT MEN "phone
books" are still in the pipeline, and when they come
along, everything will be included.

Marcel, I think one of my local shops has most of the issues you need. It's the shop I don't go to regularly, but I did pick up some issues in that stretch there recently, and I seem to recall they had multiple copies. I can help you out if you want me to.

Marcel, I can hook you up with the rest of that run (except 21, as I've already promised it). Email me your postal address to tgiberson@rogers.com.
