Question for Mr. Byrne: when did you start to consider changing Cyclops' jawline and even body-type to reflect more of his original nickname "Slim"?

****

He has always been "Slim" Summers to me. Back when I was doing the book, Shooter ordered me to beef him up to "make him look like a leader". On HIDDEN YEARS, without such interference, I was able to get closer to how I thought he should look.

Question JB:  When you do a tribute like this...do you look at the original art or do you do it from how you remember the picture?

***

I look at the original. Obviously, in this case, I had no choice!

Cool !

Interesting how you gave the originals more room and expressiveness without having the logo in the way.

John Byrne: As I have mentioned elsewhere, the publication of the X-MEN OMNIBUS allowes me to sell my bound volumes of the original comics.

*********

JB, I don't understand this, it might be my poor English. Is the new version better than the originals?

Hmph! It's odd what people assume looks like a "leader" of any kind. Jesus always gets the muscular swimmer's body and a handsome sturdy face. But who's to say he didn't look like Woody Allen or Ben Gurion?

But I like SLIM Summers! Cyclops was always a great leader through mental not physical prowess.

Not "better" per se -- but with the same material
collected in one handy volume, I don't need the
originals any more. So, since I have no special
attachment to them, and since I can make some
money if I sell them, why not do so?

If I'm not mistaken, this is one of the few times that you have drawn
Thunderbird?

X-Men 138 and ...?

Anybody?

"A very interesting contrast to the Cockrum. Something about the figures in the original, particularly the Beast, suggest not only astonishment but the sense of experiencing something repellant. Not so in the revamp, but more sheer amazement."

That's an easy one to figure out.  JB changed the angle of the old X-men just a little bit.  So instead of them drawing back in what seems to be a touch of horror, especially in the Beast and Marvel Girl, we get them looking on in astonishment.  Adding more expression to Cyclops and Angel helps that too.  Great job, JB.

Thanks JB. I want to learn more about the X-Men so I need all the help I can get when it comes to what to collect.

Added: I Assume it's some kind of hard cover volume, looking like the cover above, but I'm not sure if I'm on the right track.

JB, did drawing this page in a bound volume present any special challenges?

How many more of those bound X-Men volumes do you have to draw endpapers in?
