Gorgeous art, but I'm an idiot...what's the context/storyline?  Presumably Cap is going to have to kill something/one he feels pity and sadness toward, right?  Sorry, other than Spider-Man and the FF, my Marvel history is quite lacking!

It's Cap about to decapitate Baron Blood, a vampire.  It occurred in Roger Stern's and JB's run on Cap.

A story to go with that page:

Frank Miller told me of being up in the office the day the penciled pages arrived. He found Joe Rubenstein (the inker) studying that particular page with great consternation displayed upon his face. "What's wrong, Joe?" Frank asked.

"This last panel," Joe replied. "John has drawn speed lines on the shadow,"

"So?"

"Shadows don't have speed lines."

Whereupon Frank waved his hand rapidly back and forth in front of Rubenstein's face. "Joe! Nothing has speed lines!!"

Excellent job, JB.  The look on Cap's face is great, but the fact that you got as much emotion on Union Jack's face, which is essentially a blank, speaks volumes for your talent.  You get better every day..........

My favorite commission by far!!! Damn!!!

My favorite parts of this that really just make me "oooh"

1- The way Baron Blood's wing is going under Captain America's leg. You
can FEEL it being pulled under.

2- Captain America's chain mail. Wow. How it should look, you don't have
to see every frickin' link! It has such a sexy slinkiness to it!

3- The perspective and weight of the shield...It just feels like a real object
in Captain America's hands.

4- The sinew and tenseness of Baron Blood's muscles! They are
angry...look at those hands, just taught and vengeful!

Thank you for posting this Mr. Byrne!

Another winner, JB.  I wonder how this might look if it were inked by Mr. Rubenstein...
