 I was looking thru the sketchbook I was given long ago by JB, and I noticed something I missed all these years. It's the page layout to the original version of X-Men #138, before the changes were made. I hope you can make it out, I thought it might be of interest.

We have up here the initial splash page and panels of the 2 final pages. What we don't have are the panels intercalated in the flashbacks pages.
The published panels showed a mourning Cyclops as a narrator. Were the original ones substituted or did Byrne redraw over them?

Do you have a better scan/resolution of the page layout to the original version of X-Men #138? Some phrases are difficult to read!

This thread was a massive pleasure when it allowed a trip down the road-not-traveled into another version of the X-Men, if JB had not left.

At the time, there was no concept whatsoever of doing X-Men Elsewhen. In fact, at the time, some questions were asked about possibly commissioning a new issue of "Untold" X-Men material.

What a thrill to look through this and know that, ultimately (IMHO), we got something FAR BETTER than what was originally planned.

Looking this over again, I’m reminded of yet another example of the “collaboration” between Chris and me.

When Scott left, I wanted it to be very clear that it was only temporary. He wanted some “space” to clear his head, but he had every intention to come back, and would say so.

Not how Chris scripted it.

I think Chris was just being Chris. After all, he brought him back fully a year later, while keeping tabs on him all the way. Even the issue after you left had a Cyclops story!!
I honestly think he didn't like the character, that's why he never lost a chance to have him second fidle next to Wolverine or Storm and the Madelyne mix-up was beyond terrible. He has gone on record to say he gave Scott a farewell with Madelyne, when in fact he had laid numerous plot points hanging about her real identity. Heck, the fact that she LOOKED EXACTLY like Jean is enough!!! And when he got pushed by the return of Jean Grey he let the flood gates open, destroying whatever chance there could be to make a smooth transition back to Jean... 
Add his obsession to have Jean hook up with Logan and the retroactive change in their dynamic via Classic X-Men back stories were the more than I could stomach. Unfortunately, this stupid lie, that Jean liked Logan from the start, is considered canon...
