Could the robot Cyclops be the one from issue #99-The X-Sentinals?

Damn this sounds better than what we got. I know, it's rare, but I didn't like the Dark Phoenix Saga. I didn't really get into Claremont's run until Jr Jr came along. I also think Shooter's reaction was kind of mysoginistic. Does Magneto or Dr Doom have to suffer that fate? Why should Jean? :(

I wonder if Caliban would've gotten mistreated by follow up creators like he is today. It's fun to see you guys seemed ready to change the team roaster pretty fast. Cory's closet rocks.

And yes, Cyclops being revealed to be a robot made by Prof X would be the only thing that could salvage that character for me by now. :)

Shooter wanted her taken to a prison asteroid to be tortured for all eternity.

Wow. Where's the love? Where's the compassion?

Here's an idea, why not have something happen to a character beyond her control, then instead of trying to help her in some fashion, we instantly turn a cold shoulder and sadistically mutilate and torment her til the end of time.

Oh wait... we almost had that.

How about this?  Arcade abducts Cyclops and plants a robot within the team, to destroy them from within.

That Wolverine/Sabretooth/Mariko story sounds awesome.  Better than anything that "happened" in the title after JB left.

Definitely an interesting glimpse into what might have been.  But how often had Mariko appeared in the book by that point?  It was just in the Japan issues, right?  I don't think I'd be too attached to her as a character if her two storylines were the introduction and her death.  On the other hand, that's what we got with Thunderbird, so maybe I would be attached.

I do think I'd like Sabretooth much more as a character if he had gotten some more Claremont AND Byrne screentime.  But although I really enjoyed Power Man and Iron Fist by Jo Duffy (whatever happened to her?  I thought she was at one time the obvious person to give X-Men to if Claremont had left), those stories established Sabretooth as a second or third rater in my mind, and that never changed when he was finally put in an X-Men story.  It didn't help that when he was, they killed him and the other Marauders and quickly brought them back as clones.  What a great way to establish that readers shouldn't care about the characters.

The list John made for "future" issues doesn't even cover all the ideas they were throwing around at the time. In The Art of John Byrne, there is an interview with John that seems to have been conducted just before he started work on the whole Hellfire Club/Dark Phoenix saga. Sadly, in that article he doesn't mention any Cyclops robot, but there's something else he talks about that seems kinda spooky in 2006. In the interview, he suggests that there would soon be a new kind of Sentinel introduced, and that all the mutants in the country would have to be registered and wear some kind of tracker device so that the government knew where they were at all times. Also, that these new Sentinels would be hovering over everything, and keeping the peace by kicking mutant butt when necessary. Hmmm....does that sound...kinda familiar to any of you? Kinda like the plot to Civil War??? John, I hope Marvel's giving you a few bucks for finally using your idea...! I doubt they are, but it sure sounds similar to what you had in mind 25 years ago!

P.S.: I also thought the "death by blowfish" for Mariko Yoshida was stooopid!

Hades, the whole Mariko as "Wedded to the Yakuza" noblewoman thing kind of blows, too.

But seriously, I love this thread.  Knowing some of the things which go on behind the office doors when comics are being plotted and drawn brings a kind of perspective to the whole creative process that makes one realize what a career in comics might really be like sometimes.  And, of course, we know how editors can be in these situations.

The list of "Issue numbers - Plots (Antagonist/Villains)" entries is remarkably similar in structure to what I used to do as a kid.  Planning ahead like that may seem simple at first, but then you actually have to go and write those issues.  How much could've changed between jotting down the initial list and the more detailed plotting/scripting once you got down to it?  And this without the editor tapping you on the shoulder saying "I don't think we should do that."

I like the concept sketches and little commission sketch that Cory brought up, too.  Again, I've done things in a similar fashion as an aspiring comicbook artist myself.  Most astonishing to me is to learn that Caliban as a concept was much different from the way he turned out.  That JB could draw so well even with a ball-point pen on notebook paper is proof to me of his talents, no matter how long ago that was.

One thing of curiosity for me has always been the old Art of John Byrne collection that was out in those days.  I wasn't even aware of the interview (what I do remember is something else entirely, which I think JB must be a little embarrassed by).  Man, that stuff about mutant registration and the hovering sentinels is creepy!  And overdone these days...

Many thanks for the fine thread, guys.  Its what keeps me checking out these boards.

this seems like a good place to ask JB:

If you had stayed on X Men, were there any serious plans then (from you, cause obviously Chris remained writing) for any shuffling of the line-up?

What I'm most curious about was:
1. Did you intend for Angel to stay on?
2. Bringing back any of the auxillary characters:
Havok, Polaris, Multiple Man, Dazzler, Sunfire, Beast
3. last (for now); since you had such a great feel for the X villains, did you ever consider bringing back LUCIFER (the guy who crippled Xavier)? or even UNUS?
and, somebody will know this, but, is the TOAD dead?
I just love, loved your use of Mesmero; what a great costume on him I thought.
thanks JB!

1. Yes (For as long as we could).

2. No. (Except as guest stars.)

3. No and No. Don't know about the Toad.

I don't think Toad is dead, but he's been looking awful ever since the movie.

More

Something of interest in the interview.

Byrne: One of these days, Roger and I have a Captain America story we'd like to do, guest-starring the X-men, where Cap will be talking to a couple of them, and Wolverine is real quiet at first. And when he finally speaks, Cap will do a take and say, "Corporal Logan?". Because you see, Cap meet him during the war. And that might be the first time in one of the books that we come out and say just how old this guy is.

The Wolverine/Mariko/Sabretooth plot sounds like it would make a stirring What If? mini-series. One day, perhaps.

I love that interview! It had so many little teasers such as that one Cory excerpteded. I still have that magazine around the house somewhere.

A sketch for that dangling sub-plot called Project Wideawake mentioned on the last page of X-men # 142. (Also from Comics Journal 57)

The Sentinels were my first X-Men villian.  I honestly never tire of them.  The Hulk Annual vs the Master Mold was so good, I stole it from my cousin!

An addendum to my earlier post/plot idea about Arcade abducting Cyclops and planting a robot in his place:

The robot contains a 40 megaton nuclear device, timed to go off at Midnight when everyone in the mansion is asleep.  Maybe Prof. 'X' and Jean can be conviently away from the mansion at the time, so they cannot read "Cyclops" mind and discover he is a robot.  SInce he is asleep, Colussus will be in human form so he would not survive either...

Anyone want to add anything?

Yes. To the best of my recollection, that drawing is to scale. Also if you look closely at Gyrich's chest you'll see the Project Wideawake emblem.

How is that an Arcade style attack? Anybody could do that. What makes it unique to Arcade?

About the Cyclops robot, something keeps nagging me that it was Ultron in disguise which led to the Avengers crossover. Why? I dunno.
