John,

Thanks for post the hi res versions of your pencils., they are amazing to look at! I love looking at art work where you can see every line. It's almost as if you can read the artist's mind.

My question is this: Looking at your pages it seems like a good portion of the drawing was done with side of the lead and the pencil held in your palm vs. held 'writing style'.

1) Am I correct?

2) How much do you draw one way or the other?

3) Is there any method to when you switch (ie, I draw all with the point, then I add shading /thicker lines last) or is it back and forth based on what is required?

4) Have you always drawn this way?

Thanks for answering and thanks again for posting your pencils. Your confident linework is humbling and inspiring!

I bounce back and forth between the side-of-the-pencil approach, and the "writing style". I used to do everything the latter way, until I realized one of the reasons I was having so much trouble getting the line weights I wanted was because of this. So I started experimenting. Now I do most of the layouts side-of-the-pencil, tighten with a combination. Cloth, for instance, is almost always side-of-the-pencil, while faces and hands tend to be the other way.
