Seeing that splash of the Roxxon headquarters building got me thinking for a moment about what some of these books might have looked like if we'd had better printing back then. Much as I love the ol' letterpress books, there is much to be said for solid blacks!

Interesting to note that even as recently as this I was still figuring out how to draw my nocturnal cityscapes. I''d got about 80% of it down, but there was still that "crossword puzzle" effect I caution young artists to avoid --- plus, apparently I had not yet learned the trick of adding a layer of realism by putting things in the windows. Just random shapes, but it makes a world of difference.

Generally speaking, tho, the art on NAMOR didn't really suck too much.

For some reason I have always liked Roxxon Oil as a group of villains and it seesm very few writers use them as regular antagonists in the Marvel Universe off the top of my head I can think of the following really:

  • Steve Englehart - Captain America/The Avengers
  • John Byrne - Alpha Flight/Namor
  • Roger Stern - Spider-Man
  • Fabian Nicieza - Alpha Flight/New Warriors
  • David Michelinie/Bob Layton - Iron Man

Ah, the Marrs twins. What a vile duo they are, yet JB actually managed to make me feel bad for Phoebe.

You know what we don't see enough of in comics? Scenes like the disembodied head of Namor explaining something. It seems many artists just want to try and achieve a realistic look by avoiding such visuals.

Haven't said much about the story - but I enjoyed the entire Namor run and its change of pace from other books on the stands at the time.

I'd do despicable things to own the original art to that Roxxon tower page...even with the "flaws" that JB mentions, it's still stunning to look at.

O how frustrating this is... seeing all these wonderful pages just makes me wish that my ordered and shipped JB run of Namor could be here NOW! How durn long can it take for a bunch of JB comics to cross the Atlantic and find their way North?

Sorry for whining at the party... but here's one li'l camper who wants to join in in the fun & games.
And besides, I'm only whining because it looks so great. :)
