Fishnet tights!
Aha! Yeah, when illustrating Zatanna (which I have recentl, hence the exclamaition) as an example, the contouring on the netting will aid the positioning of the legs within the scenes perspective, right?
When these nettings are done wrong it can appear to flatten or distort the leg placement. Imagine for example looking at a -downshot- of Superman, where his chest amblem is actually wider at it's base than at it's nearest point ot he camera. It would appear 'wrong'.
I find that hatching, tapering or other forms of form-rendering can obviously have a similar effect. Helping to reinforce the artists view.
There are some moments when I see this in an image that make me cringe, more often than I like these days. However I note that there are some artists, yourself who are not immune to this but also seem to be able to pull off the breaking of this 'rule'.
I offer the forearm of the Hulk as an example of this. Had I been drawing this (I wish) I'd have looked to use the interior linework, as you have done with the hair on the arms etc to reinforce that the arm is in perspective. You have the tapering lines on the forearm actually leaning left-to-right which seems to be heading back wards by comparison...somehow though this seems to work and I'm at a loss. Hence my question. I take for granted that a lot of "art" is spur of the moment and that we do what we do with one foot in the rules and the other squarely set in our own gut instinct.
I guess I was looking for a little of the JB insight-LOL...just as food for thought.

Now that is a Hulk! Massive and savage. Best character shot to date. It's amazing that John altered his method of drawing to get a diferet feel for the piece. To me that makes this one special indeed!! Piece just has a frenetic feel. Love the look on his face, positively frightning, and love how the eye is bulging. Best Hulk I have ever seen.

Oh and Matt, I agree the character poses are awesome. Unobscured shots. You can really see John's individual take on each of these characters. Incredible!!!

I don't think John can possibly top himslef after the Nightcrawler and Hulk charactr poses. No way to top these two. If only the movie Hulk looked like this. I'm also gettinga Blood of the Demon vibe from it. Not sure why!

At various times through his career, as JB has actively worked to expand his
style and skill-set as an inker, he has been both my favourite JB-Inker and
my least favourite.
These last few commissions (going back at least to the Captain America/Red
Skull one that was used as the jumping off point for the Art Challenge) have
shown that JB has now reached a point where there is no-one better suited
to inking JB than JB himself.
Bravo!

wow mr byrne you have really out did yourself with this drawing, it is
so savage the way the hulk is loooking at me and the hair he has is
very nice. if this was the hulk art i would buy the comic every time as
long as that man wasn't writing it. we would like you to write a hulk
comic some day!

I love how you manage to make your signature box such an integral part of this one John. Did that happen spontaneously, or was it part of the "plan" when you started this one?

Gaa Gaa Goo! Its everything Hulk should be. I was kinda choked about the Spidey movie thread being deleted but this makes me forget everything. All is well!! Byrne art wipes away the misery of my life!
Can't wait for the next one. I know it'll be even better than this one!
