Correct.
Despite some good stories coming from that era (by way of Bill Mantlo, Peter David, and some bum named Byrne), that storyline really started the Hulk down the path of constant change and instability he still treads to this day.
Banner controlling the Hulk led to the mindless Hulk, which led to the child-abuse origin, which led to JB separating Banner and the Hulk, which led to the grey Hulk's return, which led to Peter David's run, which led to Joe Fixit, which led to the "merged" Hulk, which led to lots and lots of incarnations for the character.
I've always wondered just how different things would have been had JB stayed aboard. We know that he intended to take the Hulk back to the beginning, both in appearance and personality. I also have a theory about how that might have happened, and about the "very, very important death" JB alluded to in interviews of the day. Of course, I'd love to know specifics about what would have happened, but JB's Rule Number One must be respected.
