Beautiful savage Hulk there, JB. I especially love the p.o.v. for the image. A sort of eye in the sky, and given the look on the Hulk's face, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near that eye position.

HULK SMASH indeed!

JB's aborted run on Incredible Hulk was particularly hard to swallow many years ago.  Good to see the jade giant by Byrne once again!

As gorgeous as the texture and shading on the Hulk is, I keep being drawn to his face. 

The eyes in particular give off a very Kirby-ish vibe, especially after seeing that page from issue 5.  I started reading comics in the mid-to-late '70s and "met" the Hulk when he was the childish, "Hulk smash!" character.  The Hulk held no appeal for me until I read some pocket-sized reprints of the Kirby issues.  The page that JB posted from issue 5 won me over to the savage Hulk.  Those three panels and Stan's description of the Hulk's savagery would have made me wet my pants if I had read them at an earlier age.  The most haunting image for me was his eyes, with one wide open and the other half shut.  There's just something about that look that, for me at least, screams "savage".

And then there's the mouth in general and the teeth in particular.  If ugly teeth can be beautifully rendered, this is the best example of it.  You don't need color to know that these are not pearly-whites.  It's attention to detail like this that helped to make "Blood of the Demon" so enjoyable to me.  Nobody draws ugly teeth as well.

Nice commission, JB.  The owner of this one should be one very happy customer.

Well, I have been a huge fan of Hulk ever since I was a child. And JB's Hulk is definitely among my favourites. Others would include Sal Buscema (the ultimate Hulk artist in my book), Herb Trimpe, and Todd McFarlane.
Never really thought that much of Kirby's Hulk, not even now that I've gone through the first Essential volume. Much as I love Kirby, his Hulk doesn't quite do it for me, which I know is kind of ironic, since I can neverthless see the traces of it in both JB's and McFarlane's versions of him. Maybe is the over-all feeling of the character being in so much flux early on that influences me partly, I don't know.

And I still think the angle/p.o.v. is what really puts this Hulk image in the "toppest" of top notch depiction of old mean and green.
