"I read that Joakim was born in the 70's just like me and he's just part of the same indoctrination that was fed into us about the US. My late grandfather from former Yugoslavia, a teacher, actually taught shit about US of A. Until he went there, then he saw that he had been indoctrinated all his life. I'm sure Joakim will 'wake up' also. My dad still has a way to look up to communists, for example when we were in S:t Petersburg where our ancestors came from (on my slavic side) I had no right to complain about the food since it was Mother Russia. However when I was in the States with him he said: Complain all you like, this is a free country :)."

Well, I wouldn't say that I am that indoctrinated. I certainly have no love lost for the old Soviet Union, but I am having a hard time stomaching the rhetoric of the Bush government when it basically takes away civil liberties under the banner of protecting them. So all in all, it's very much a reaction to things happening in recent history (less than a decade), than any childhood indoctrination.

So all in all, my "negative view" is a fairly recent development in my view of the US on the whole. The only thing "stopping me" before was time, money and the fact that I've tended to favour the UK over the US on occasion – and even there time and money becomes a factor. Also, in all honesty, the seeming need for a car in many US locations is also a bit of a deal breaker as I've got no driver's license (at least not yet, haven't got around to it so far).

If the day comes when I set foot upon US soil, I am sure there'll be plenty of good experiences to be had... after all, I've met plenty of friendly Americans both in the flesh and on-line, so there...

Of course... but instantly rehired since we're having far too much fun. ;)

And besides, Kevin... Ni ni ni ni ni ni!!!!

Lars and Joakim:

STRID! STRID! STRID!

No, Joakim, I was just being childish (unusually...) and abusing an online Swedish-English dictionary.

It didn't sound quite right though. "strid" connect better with the sense of "fight" that corresponds well to "battle". If you'd wanna be more accurate you should probably have used the word "slass" (please note that the "a" shouldn't be an "a" but actually have a circle on top of it).

You did throw me off balance therew for a second though, Dan. ;)

O and congrats to having passed 700... but I still have a small lead. ;)

I love how Lars united the two topics, bringing unity to the thread once more.

Nothing amuses me more than the relationship men have with beer.  I can't stand the stuff - I think I'm just too inhibited to take something that can lower inhibitions.  But I love drinking songs.  Hmm.

Beer is the water mankind need. Cigarrettes are the air mankind need.

I am currently in Shanghai for the holidays and I tried a Steinlager for lunch. Not bad. I bought a big bottle of Asahi for 45 cents as well as a new brand. Green Apple Kirin. I thought it was beer as it had 5.5% on the side but it was green apple flavoured pop. With 5.5% content. Dangerous stuff. It tastes just like pop with no alcohol taste at all.

Alcopops are the curse of the drinking classes.  They are massive with under-age drinkers over here.

Allow me to interupt this beer discussion to get back on topic for a moment. I am no longer a Mod here, by my own choice. That is all.

"no one is being jailed for expressing political opinions or speaking out against the current administration. The policies you refer to have only been used on people with strong ties to terrorist activities."

During the 2004 Republican National Convention here in New York I was arrested about a block away from the former World Trade Center site for walking down the sidewalk photographing anti-war protesters, as were many others who happened to be in the "wrong place at the wrong time."  A police officer assured the assembled protesters through a megaphone that despite their lack of permit, the police would escort their peacful march toward the RNC site in midtown, only to arrest them en masse once they had been corraled into the NYPD's rather obvious (in hindsight) trap just a little further up the block.  Hundreds of us were cuffed, marched onto waiting buses, never read our rights, never told what crime we were arrested for, jailed overnight (in some cases longer), and were only provided lawyers moments before a perfunctory dismissal in front of a judge.  The next day the Post's headline read "ANARCHISTS NABBED!"  I assure you there are many more details to this story that should be disturbing to any American.

Funny thing as I have gone through life and conversed with people from places such as Finland and Germany; they stopped being nationalistic stereotypes and started being real places with regional differences in culture, styles, and attitude.

The U.S. Government, whomever is in office and whatever geopolitical positions they hold, is in many ways the least important and defining thing about America and one thing I wish for for my non-North American friends and acquaintances in this forum is that they get to know my country through its people instead of news reports as I have gotten to know their countries through theirs.

Merry Christmas.

Sam Parker, before I answer you, answer this: on what charge exactly were you arrested?

Sam, from what I can read from the Anarchists own postings on line about that event as well as the news stories, people who were arrested were charged with something, most being parading without a permit. Which means, despite the obvious political motivations for doing so, people weren't charged for disagreeing with the policies of the Bush administration. Again, what were you charged with?

James, you deserve a better answer than that, but of course, so did I.  About 22 hours after being taken into custody I was told I'd been "assembling without a permit" or somesuch (I regret not taking detailed notes right afterwards).  I took some issue with this having not been assembling at all.  After a sleepless night of being transferred from cell to cell to over-crowded cell and being digitally fingerprinted, I was told, during my brief time before the judge (quite literally less than a minute) that if I managed to not get arrested again in the next six months, this incident would be expunged from my record.  It's been a while and I've stayed clean, but if you believe there's no file with my name in it somewhere, then, well, I've got some WMDs to sell you...
