Hi JB - as a kid growing up, I enjoyed your style of drawing in comics. One my favs was Alpha Flight, I have read that you were pushed by Marvel to start up the franchise (not sure if that is accurate). However, did you enjoy the series? Also, was it your decision to kill of James Hudson at the time and why?
thanks

ALPHA FLIGHT, as a series, was much more Marvel's idea than mine. There was tremendous fan interest, and the Powers That Were wanted to cash in on it. I was less enthused. Alpha to me served best as guest stars. That was, after all, what they had been created to be. But Marvel pushed, and eventually I relented. Some of what followed was fun, but mostly ---- not so much.I killed Jim Hudson because he was the least interesting character, but I knew his death would generate the most interesting storyline.

I'm hoping we can get a JBF Reading Club going for his 28 issues with Alpha Flight. Not my favorite series or work of his by far but a very interesting and non-conventional run that in my mind has aged very well.

It's funny to me how much different my take on the book as a reader was from yours as the Author JB. I always found Guardian to be the most interesting character. His marriage to Heather, his skill as an inventor, and a little bit of self doubt because he really wasn't a guy that was suppose to be the hero made for a good mix of complexity. Not to mention being a symbol for Canada!

Was it an interestingly creative process drawing Alpha Flight #5, JB. It is and remains the prime example of motion capture comic magazine art in my mind.

I've always felt that JB underestimated Alpha Flight's importance and the overall greatness of the characters. His run was easily one of the best mainstream series in the last 30 years and was one of the last truly innovative mainstream titles. To be perfectly honest, I think that characters like Snowbird, Sasquatch, Shaman, and Puck were every bit as interesting as anyone who has ever worn an "X" on their belt buckle.
