I recently saw an article or blog with the top comic covers of all time -- the winner was Perez's Crisis #7 - The Death of Supergirl.  I demand a recount based on the following:

(Perez 1985)

and....

(Byrne 1980)

....too close to call....???

...anyone???

that was the result of the poll that DC just had to pick the best DC cover of all time.

That Crisis cover came in first.

Second place was  Flash #123 (Flash of Two Worlds)

Third was Dark Knight Returns #1

  Fourth was Action Comics  #1

   Fifth was The Killing Joke

That X-Men cover was not published by DC, was it? It was for DC covers.

edited - Aaron beat me to the explanation.

I brought this up a few weeks ago, too. It made everyone uncomfortable, because most of us here are fans of both John Byrne and George Perez simultaneously.

While I do love both covers (and am a fan of both artists) I don't think either cover would make my Top Ten All Time Greatest let alone Greatest Cover of All Time.

Hey - I couldn't clearly recall where I had seen the poll -- so for DC covers - okay it wins -- for everything else -- I never said it was bad cover - I actually prefer GP to JB (today) since I feel GP has grown his art and story-telling in a different direction to how JB has over recent years.

Did JB respond to this previous post and the similarities in the covers?  Heck -this was something I noticed 20 years ago when Crisis was first published.  Most covers I've seen "mimicked" usually are signed "Bryne after Kirby" or something like that -- this cover never was....is it too generic a pose?

If you can link me to your previous thread - I'd love to read it.

The previous thread brought up many covers based on this layout, as well as many pieces of classical art and sculpture which are extremely similar to this image. It just seems to be n image that has been used so often in art, whether comics or not, that it is almost archetypal.

Personally, I prefer the X-Men cover over the Crisis cover, although part of that may be due to my sentimental attachment to the X-Men stories of the period, an attachment that does not apply to Crisis.

...that was probably the best issue of Crisis, though -- with Superman so pissed he wanted to "kill" -- yeah -- the glory days....

I really would love to read that other thread if it can be located...

The thing about these two covers is the fact that George positioned Superman EXACTLY in the same pose as Cyclops.  The head is bent the same way.  The mouth is almost the same.  The hands and legs are the same.

Phoenix and Supergirl are also positioned identically, legs, arms, body, head.

Actually, I love both covers.  But I am going to give the nudge to John because you can feel Cyclops' pain but you cannot see his eyes.  It is difficult to show emotion without being able to show the eyes.  George is free to show Superman's eyes crying.

Also, the background characters on X-Men 136 are showing alot more emotion than the entire DC universe on Crisis 7.

Superman bawling his eyes out just doesn't make it into my great covers list. I don't want to hold George Perez to blame for all of the terrible "weeping Superman" covers (and the general "oversensitive" Superman we've had over the past few years), but there are probably at least 100 Superman covers off the top of my head that I prefer to the Crisis one.

I think something interesting shows in the results of the poll. The top five covers in the poll include 3 covers that were from "pivotal" or "noteworthy" comics of the recent past, within the reading lifetimes of many of today's comics fans. The other two are very famous older covers. I think any poll like this is destined to wind up being won by covers that may not be the best or most interesting, but simply among the most instantly recognizable.
