My fiance has zero interest in nearly all things comics. Though she has been incredibly supportive of my interest and enjoys seeing the enthusiasm that I have for them, the only book that has grabbed her to the point of being really invested in the series has been Strangers in Paradise. She enjoyed Vaugn's PRIDE graphic novel as well. Fables had her mildly interested, but she didn't read past the second tpb. Everything else presented to her thus far, not even a nibble,,,,, .

I've never met a woman remotely interested in comics, but if I had to try (let's say she's a mystery/thriller/suspense fan), I'd go with the SANDMAN MYSTERY THEATRE trades that are being released. Seriously, the love story alone between Dodds and Dian Belmont alone is quite mature, and I remember being struck with the so-real agony of loving someone and having them hate you at the same time. In fact, you could stand to buy the whole series on the cheap, 70 issues, if she digs it.

For another shot at superhero noir, you could do worse than turning her onto a trade of Miller/Mazzuchelli's "Born Again". If she dug REQUIEM FOR A DREAM or if she's an Independent film fan, or a fan of cool hitman movies of the 70s, she might dig on Miller's best tale.

Or, if science fiction is her bag, try TOM STRONG or TOMORROW TALES for some SF leanings, MAN OF STEEL by Byrne is you're trying to zero her in on the greatest superhero with enough SF elements to get her by.

For the horror fan wife/girlfriend, I try WALKING DEAD unless she hates zombies, which means I wouldn't be with her anyway, unless she's Carla Gugino or Rosario Dawson. WALKING DEAD has enough emotional content to satisfy any woman's needs. If you're feeling cocky, you can try the TOMB OF DRACULA Essentials, but she might not like the 70s Wolfman hip-talk and black and white. In that case, get her to try a little Hellboy. Really, you could do worse

My wife steers clear of the superhero comics- she liked the first Runaways, but the second edition is losing her interest. She doesn't like that people never stay dead.

But, she does like other comics:
Sandman
Y: The Last Man
Eightball
Chris Ware's stuff
Adrian Tomine

The indie side, really. Although she enjoyed the Bizarro Hardbacks that came out in the past few years a lot.
Edited- god my typing is bad!

My wife likes Bone, the Tick, and Groo.  Good taste if you ask me.   Of course, she may read Groo to get insight into my psyche. She's tricky that way.

My girlfriend enjoyed the early issues of Amazing Spider-Man. I lent her the old Pocket Books editions from the early '80s and she read them on the train. She also enjoyed JB's run on Fantastic Four.

Jon Said: I would recommend Sandman trades, starting with Dream
Country and then Season of Mists.

I agree with Sandman but why out of order?

Just curious.

************

I have found that my female friends love these two best. The first
collection, Preludes and Nocturnes, was a rocky start for the character
and there are a few DC cameos that might be confusing for a non-comics
reader. It also has very awkward art by Sam Keith.

The Doll's House is better, but I think it is a lot to digest without getting
to know the character of Sandman first.

I would recommend this order:

Dream Country, Season of Mists, The Doll's House, Preludes and
Nocturnes, A Game of You - the rest in order.

Promethea would be another good read for her, I think.

Yeah. My wife liked Promethea, too. She actually like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, too.

And Bone.

She really like James Kochalka, in particular PEanut BUtter and Jeremy's Best Book Ever.

Y: The Last Man would be an excellent choice and nice little book called Fell.
