My only complaint, not enough arm hair!

****

Always seem to find myself of two minds on that point. The massive outsprouting of arm hair didn't happen until George Perez did that cover for 112. Dave tended to draw Logan as if he had flesh colored sleeves in his costume -- he seemed only to be hairy when out of costume. After George did his cover, I thought "Why not!" and just went with it.

Still leaves me wondering what to do every time I draw something pre-George, tho.

Man, I think this looks very great. I'm bordering on thinking this may be the best Wolverine I've ever seen. Maybe it's just because it'd cause fanboys everywhere to screech in horror, but I really dig it.

Great job JB! Thanks, just the look I had in mind. I always thought the Romita designed mask had potential - I think the shorter ears make him look very tough. I always wanted to see this costume with the brown colors you chose for your re-design which were much stronger than the original yellow and blue used.

JB, first: Cool drawing! Second, was there ever anytime after you took to drawing the arm hairs on Wolverine that you regretted it because of the added time to draw it?

On another note. as I understand it, the reason Wolverine's mask changed is because Gil Kane drew it wrong on the cover to "Giant-Size X-Men" #1, and Dave Cockrum thought it looked better and inked it the way Kane had it. Is that correct?

That commission is an excellent example of the elements JB has used in Wolverine that define the "right" way to draw him.  Short, wide, and moving in that crouching, coiled way a cat does before it decides to leap.  It reminds me very much of the issue where he was fighting the Hellfire club--  predatory and sneaking.  I think that element was lost once the writing of the character changed to the schizoid samurai/berzerker, rather than the plain old "nasty sonuvabitch" he seemed to be in his first couple of years.

Put me down as another fan of the original mask and costume. Love the
power contained in the pose too.
