For some reason the Kamandi Archives are looking interesting to me.  The problem is that  I have never read a Kamandi comic so I really do not know what I would be getting into.

This is a problem when the book costs $50.  I think it is $32.99 at Amazon but that is quite a chunk of change for soemthing that you have no idea how good it is.  Archives are also sealed in plastic so I cannot even see how the art looks.

It is too bad these were not Showcase collections first.

What do you guys think of Kamandi?

It was Jack Kirby's longest running title during his tenure at DC,.  I remember reading a few of the issues around the time the "Plante of the Apes" movie series was big, and enjoyed this world of sentient animals in a dystopain future.  I'm like you, though, the cost of the Archives makes it a little too costly for me.  I thik a Showcase format would show off Kirby's work better. much like the Eseential Marvel Fantastic Four and Thor compilations I'm currently enjoying.  Hope that helps.

It definitely would've been easier on my wallet had it been in paperback format but I really like seeing Kirby's art in colour.

If you like the pure Kirby style art and story from the 70s, along the same lines as his Demon, New Gods, and his Black Panther solo series, you should like Kamandi. I've always felt that reading this era's Kirby was like a completely different experience than reading his work with Stan Lee, but the differences don't make it less enjoyable.

Run - don't walk!
if the $$$ bothers you, try my method: the Kamandi Archives have 10 issues - at 32.99, that's 3.29 per issue, or comparable to today's price per issue - each story is 22-25 pages (i think today's comics are hovering around 20) - and it's Kirby! among other things, that means there's more than 6 word ballons per page, and each character is treated with respect.

edited to add that getting others to buy the 1st two Kamandi Archives (thus increasing the liklihood of a volume 3, 4 and maybe even 5) has in no way biased my decision!

Kamandi's a great comic book, and with the Archive series, it's finally getting some much-deserved attention (along with much of the rest of Kirby's 1970s output).

My wife's a big Kamandi fan, too, and she surprised me with this as a Christmas present a few years back:

The shrieking bat-creatures that attack Kamandi throughout that particular issue are some of the scariest menaces I've ever seen in a comic book, period.

This is actually the first page I have seen of Kamandi.  The story already seems intersting and it is only one page.

Andrew,

Thanks for posting that!

Michael, If you like any solo Kirby, you'll probably like Kamandi.  The first volume of the Archives I thought was particularly good (better inks, and my favorite story), but the second volume is also quite good and includes giant insects.

I'll be very forthcoming that my desire is to see all the Kirby issues collected into Archives, by the way.

Loved reading Kamandi. I have the first archive. I think that this is the first series I ever read by JK right off the comic rack.

I have the entire run of KAMANDI, and I'm debating selling off the issues and buying the archives.  What do you all think?  Good idea, or hang onto the originals?

Hard on your wallet? HAH.

This book is worth 10x what they're charging for the reprints. It may be
the weirdest and wildest Kirby book of all time.

Absolutely a favorite. Kamandi is a frisky "longhair" who doesn't take crap from gorillas. That short rifle he uses is awesome, and the kid finds himself teamed up with some of Kirby's very best supporting characters in Ben Boxer, a fella who can transform himself into a kind of steel (was Colossus before or after?), and Prince Tuftan, tiger royalty who is good with his fists. You also get the most fun Giant Cricket action ever.

Also, the story of Flower is probably the one time Kirby gets down to some real sad business in his comics, which were often emotional in all the wrong places (yet still fun).

Kamandi was the series that caused the switch in my brain to move to the Kirby setting.

I read the 4th World stuff, but wasn't entirely sold on Kirby.  I picked up Kamandi #1 out of sheer despiration (a road trip with my parents, and it was the only DC book on the rack that I didn't already have).  I thought that the use of the Stature of Liberty on the cover was a total POTA rip-off (which it was... DC told Kirby to do a POTA type book, and he delivered)...  so I wasn't going to pick up the series.

But man, that first issue blew me away.  The best thing for me was getting to see Kirby take on a new animal race each month.  At the end of the issue, they'd pimp that Kamandi would be meeting Leopards, or Killer Whales, or Praying Mantises... and you'd get all psyched about how Kirby was going to pull it off.

I've heard that it wasn't Kirby's favorite project, but I loved it.  It's still my favorite Kirby classic.

I have the entire run also. I'll keep them till I die and then my kids can sell them.

Once upon a time, I asked for it. However DC was
already developing a kind of surfer-dude Kamandi.

Jesus!  Did this abomination ever see the light of day, JB?

Well, I have the first Archive and absolutely LOVE IT!!! The second one is in an order from Amazon that should be arriving in the beginning of next month (some pre-ordered stuff in it) and I'm definitely looking forward to that. Go ahead and buy them or at least buy the first one and see what you think, Michael! It's great storytelling and great fun!

Sad thing. Mostly that you didn't get it. Have you ever considered asking again, JB? After all you've handled so many other Kirby characters and concepts so fantastically well in the past.
(and here's hoping that the upcoming HC volumes of Kirby's Fourth World stuff will prompt DC to at the very least release some TPBs with JB's Fourth World stuff.)

I found it on ebay for cheaper but when you add the extremely high shipping  and handling (over $11) it comes out to the same price on Amazon for new.

Amazon also works with some people who sell it independently.  The odd thing is someone is selling in for $79.99 plus $3.49 s&h.  i thought that was strange since I can still get it new for $32.99 with free shipping.

Just in case anyone cares, I have it on order now and I can't wait until it gets here.  Of course that probably means DC is ready to announce a cheaper version.

Kamandi seems to be one of those concepts that just about every comic creator loves, but the fans just never buy it. Which is too bad.
