looking back thru Essentials etc,it does look like originally the X- Men were in black, but it didnt take long for them to be drawn more open for colour.

Superheroes are supposed to be colourfull arent they? if theyre all in various costumes of black,it would be pretty dull.

Your little "joke" fails Frank, due to Wolverine's costume has
established black elements -- the mask, the flare on the boots --
which would not work, of course, as black-on-black.

This argument/discussion would be easily resolved if every once in a while comic book writers had characters say some something like " Hey wolvie I jussssst lurve your black and yellow suit"   or   "Cyclops darling, you look HOT in black"

 

 

it would solve a lot of heartache :-)
