Hawkeye is not what I'd call a natural leader. Especially in a group of people who had already demonstrated their own skills in that capacity. Seemed to me like he would tend to get eclipsed a lot by the other heavy hitters -- so that's how I played it.

You know what gives that shot of the Quinjet on top of page 13 all its
roaring power? The heavy black lines rendering its exhaust. I shudder to
think how that would be coloured today.

That's fair. I think Steve Englehart did a decent job of showing how he would able to handle a leadership role. But the shift of power did create an interesting dynamic. And once a certain take charge, shield-slinging character joined up things really changed.

The end of this issue was a real stunner for me, back in the day. Totaly shocking. At this point, i had no clue what would come at the end of these stories. To some extent that is lost today.

Great issue. Enjoyed seeing the team go after the Vision. One thing I enjoy are subplots and was already guessing what is going on with the twins as soon as I read it as well as who the Wasp saw in the cell. Didn't even come close in the end. Glad to see more of the Vision's origin in this issue. I haven't read some of those issues in years. Also I was shocked by the ending. Poor Vision.

I shudder to think how that would be coloured today. *** Something I picked up from Ditko. To make an area look bright, surround it with heavy blacks. And, you are right. Today those blacks would be knocked out in color, and the area they contain would be rendered less bright.

I love the inks. Great job on the part of Mike Machlan.
I'm rereading my copies these days (because of this 'reading club'),
and while doing so I remembered my reaction when reading them for
the first time...of course, you should consider I was (and I guess I still am)
a Marvel boy all the way, and this was my first Byrne work after his FF run
since I had read almost nothing of his Superman run*...these issues sure
blew my head at the time.
* I have, in part, solved this over time...
