MTU #79 is easily one of my all-time favourite comics! What can be better than Spider-Man and Red Sonja being drawn by John Byrne?? The story is excellent as well!

The story is barely there, but given the restrictions under which we labored, I guess it gets the job done.

Incidentally, that story began its life as a Spider-Man/CONAN team-up. It just turned out to be far less hassle to use Sonja.

Terrific JB. Love all the detail on the sword and the detached head. Also, I love redheads. Go Red Sonja!

I still think it was a good story - - especially when you consider it's an unlikely team-up.

What a great idea and what a great commission.  Blown away.

I predict a surge in Red Sonja commission requests.

IMO MJ turning into Sonja was a novel idea.

I've said it before and I recall you mentioning it was strictly out of the question at the time but a MJ/Sonja book could have been a great fun.

JB,

how would you have drawn different if the commissioner asked for RED SONYA?

James,

Great point.  I have very little interest in the Red Sonja character. But I still love this commission.  Any character, in the hand of a great artist becomes interesting.  The reason I got into comics in the first place was because of the art.  And this cover would have translated into a purchase

Maybe 1/8th of a figure?

Nah -- I threw in the head for free.

There's a dirty joke in there somewhere....     Nah.  I'll let it slide on by.

Anyway, that is a great piece.  I love your action pieces, but these "posed" pieces are usually the ones I end up liking the most!

I think she's a sandwich away from perfection. She just looks a little too skinny to me, like too many starlets these days. Otherwise, very cool piece. It stirkes me as possible that I've never seen you do Conan. Is that right? One of you moneybags needs to request a Conan now. :-)

The difference being that Sonja is a lean, mean fighting machine, not an anorexic clothes horse. Frank Thorne notwithstanding, I can't imagine the character having an ounce of fat to spare.
