Ahhh, I love it. I'm sure there are things you wanted to change while recreating this, JB, but I just don't see "problems" with your old work at all! Plus- I just LOVE the amount of black you used to incorporate into the old stuff (yeah, I know this is a night scene too :-p)

Well, night screne, plus two central figures in dark costumes. If this had been, say, the Silver Surfer holding Nova, I wouldn't have had the same options.

I'm still amazed at how much Austin you can put in your inks.

Wolverine really gets to me. Struck with a situation he can't fight his way out of, he's so upset he can't even look.

30 years after the fact, it's gratifying to have someone pick up on that, Kevin. I wanted, back in the day, to play Wolverine as a man of huge, sweeping emotions, but one who kept them bottled up, or channeled them into fury and rage. That was why the whole Mariko story, as I conceived it -- but not as executed in my absence! -- was going to be so special!

This brings up the emotions I felt when I first read that story, even though I read it after it came out and already knew the ending. I shudder to think about the pain that Scott and the other X-Men went through, and this rendering demonstrates it so well, almost like an injection of emotion into my heart.
Thanks, JB.

Did you get to model the figures on the original cover as you pleased, JB? How much wordless cover art requires the approval of the writer (or co-writer) and editor?
