My favorite of the whole run, even with the incluson of The Beyonder.
That being said, I would have thought that a more "classic" character like Dr. Strange would have been a more appropriate time-travel guide for Johnny. Strange is a physician and this would have been a good opportunity to show that he does other things with his magic than defend the universe.

As I have mentioned before, this story was originally plotted without the Beyonder's intrusion. If anybody has ever wondered why that lady doctor gets such play, only to pretty much vanish from the story without any sort of resolution, that's why. As I plotted this tale, it was she who gave Johnny the background on Tommy Hanson. The scenes of Tommy in life were played ot in the Torch's imagination, rather than thru Beyond-o-Vision.When Shooter dealt out the issue numbers that had to cross with SECRET WARS, however, this was the issue of FF that got hit. I begged to be released for just this one story, but Shooter was adamant. His story was, after all, much, much more important than mine. Pyrrhic victory: I have often seen HERO cited as not only one of my best, but one of the best comic stories "of all time". SW2 seems, oddly, to never make it into that circle.

Johnny not having the emotional strength to fly and just hailing a taxi is one of the most heartrending images in comics. JB: Does that scene work as you intended?
The presence of The Beyonder in this book is painful. A non-human lecturing Johnny on what it means to be human. Was the Doctor supposed to fill in for the Beyonder in the "original"?

Incidentally, the physical "model" for Tommy was a kid named Luke, a friend of my step-daughter's who also went to St. Anne's in Brooklyn Heights. (Yes, along with Jennifer Connelly.) He got a real kick out of it.

Oh Gerry, your next thread concerning the next issue will be the longest thread of the JBF reading club. Are you up to it? You do know the story concerning that issue with Jean Grey?
I would honestly like to read the actual version of the tale Mr. Byrne written in the voice and thought balloons. Is it possible to retrieve that--the real version of John Byrne's Fantastic Four vol. 1. issue 286 titled: "Like A Phoenix..."?

I first read this story when I was fifteen and I did cry. As I have every other time I have read it. It touched me on a really personal leval.

Just out of curiosity, JB, was the rumored reason why Johnny was replaced by H.E.R.B.I.E. in the 70's cartoon the inpiration (or, at least, one of the inspirations) for the story?
P.S. Secret Wars II was total garbage.

A sad, beautiful masterpiece of storytelling. This is why, excepting only Stan Lee, JB is my favorite comic book writer. This tale is magical. Just flat-out great.
