Thanks guys!  The fact that the pages were consecutive, feature Negative Man, a JB dinosaur and tell a great story without the lettering made these an easy buy for me!

great pages Joe.i gotta get me a Jb page witha cityscape (i know the one i want, its just not available)

whats all your opinions on this page? i dont own it,but im curious about what you guys think.its up for sale as a BWS page, but the description makes clear its Sal buscema inks on a vellum overlay, there are no BWS pencils  involved, its an inked overlay.its $4000

$4,000 seems high for half* a piece of interior art, featuring small panels.

*meaning just the inks

Gerry,

This is one of those gray area pieces.... Its a fantastic example of BWS' early Conan art, and it IS the original published artwork, but....

Is it a BWS page or a Sal Buscema page? I'm assuming that the original pencils are out there somewhere... what are they worth if this is 4K? This IS the original artwork for that page... even if BWS may have never touched it.

Its like the recent examples of inking on blue lines, thereby creating TWO pieces of original art.Which one is worth more... are the both the REAL art or is one "more" real.

I guess that's a question each collector has to ask himself.... are you buying it as a BWS page or a Conan page.... Me, I'd love both framed side by side.

But, 4K for a vellum overlay? Not sure about that.... it IS a nice example tho!

Also seems high when no actual pencils are attached to it – I mean let's say
"Joe Shmo" found a penciled Neal Adams image in a magazine and then
inked it on a vellum overlay – should you be paying for the Adams or the
Shmo*?

[*Not that Sal is a shmo - not at all! He's fantastic. It's just that his pages don't normally sell in that price range - so the piece should be in the Sal range not in the BWS range.]

Am I babbling? LOL

BWS said the pencils were never returned to him, he does give more info, which ill post in a mo.

i would rather have a page of BWS pencils inked by Sal,rather than an inked overlay, especially at that price.

the page it is featured on says this

This original is somewhat unusual for a comic art page. BWS drew a combination of finished pencils and layouts for Conan #23. The inkers of the book, Sal Buscema, Dan Adkins and Chic Stone, inked the pages on heavy vellum overlays. The hand lettered balloons and captions were then pasted over the finished art. This page was inked by Sal Buscema, the regular inker for most of Windsor-Smith’s tenure on Conan The Barbarian. The pencil art was never returned to BWS, so it is not included

in CBA #2 BWS says this of Sal's inking

"Sal Buscema was serviceable and competent,i suppose, but he would often slick over my more sensitive mannerisms"

he also comments in less than glowing terms about that issue "it was an experiment that failed utterly . . ive never looked at that particular issue since it was published"

Gerry, I'd view that more as an historical document or an example of Sal Buscema's inks before I'd consider it an example of BWS's work...even though I understand the method used in creating it.  But there's none of BWS actually on there.  For four grand, you can get something original that he finished himself.

Don't honestly have a clue how to value a page in monetary terms, but I have to say that it's a nice page, for whatever that's worth.
