Terrible idea by Mantlo.

I take back what I said yesterday, I want to see a two pack from the Classic Figurine line of Puck and Oberon.  Maybe they can sneak one by Marvel and DC.

It really is enjoyable reading these stories for the first time.  Thanks Ryan.  Must also say that I'm surprised that the AF characters aren't better represented in the commissions.

I picked this issue up for the first time last year, when I was on a must fill in my Byrne Alpha Flight holes kick.  Great cover and great "down-time" story after the two parter with Marina and the Master of the World.

Unfortunately, when Bill Mantlo took over writing ALPHA FLIGHT, despite doing a mountain of homework -- he actually cut up issues and pasted panels together to make a kind of "Cliff Notes" for himself -- he apparently picked up only on the painful part, and missed the reference to the disease. Thus, Puck ended up possessed by a demon

Bill Mantlo. Despite great runs on The Incredible Hulk, ROM and Spectacular Spider-Man he became the Scourge of Alpha Flight

Bill Mantlo's wanton destruction of Alpha Flight killed my love for comics.

Love the "hairy" Puck logo on the cover!  Not sure how JB achieved it, but I feel very uncomfortable when reading the pages where Judd is hurting.  It's like I feel it too; something about the convincing facial expressions combined with knowing that Judd can deal with average levels of pain but can't easily handle the wounds Marrina inflicted.  A drug ring story like this was so different from a typical team battle story, which is why I still love it and it reads even better through adult perception.  Very sad origin to Shaman, to lose 3 family members in one day, all for different reasons.

I'm with Greg, and I didn't even realize it until he mentioned it - Puck's gut-wrenching expressions were not easy on my 10-year-old eyes, not to mention the blood trail he was leaving behind.

This is the kind of comic that proclaims "Greatness!"

Whatever happened to such joy and loving energy in a comic book?

Speaking of Mantlo, whatever happened to him?  I thought he was in a car accident like 15 years ago or so but I haven't heard anything after that.  I don't think he died.

He ended up suffering severe brain trauma from the accident, and is currently living in a nursing home.  Last year some people got together and did a Tribute Book called Mantlo: A Life in Comics.

 I loved it ! I loved it ! I loved it !

In a better world that this one, we would have had a second JB Alpha Flight by now.
Gosh I miss these characters so much...
