JB:  The three pages you contributed to UNCANNY X-MEN #273 were the first time you had worked on the book in more than a decade.  How did you contribution to that issue come about, and what was the experience like?

Thanks.

No stories, really. I was asked, so I drew. Pretty much it.

Yes I'm surprised too. I thought JB's short return to Uncanny in the late 200's was as writer aid only.

I liked the earrings that JB gave Storm on those pages.  Loverly!

Different thing.  #273 had several artists contributing pages, and JB was one of them.  (Storywise, it was one of those "coming off of one big story and about to start the next one" kinds of things.)  JB came back to script Uncanny with #281.

This is the only time Scott Williams (Jim Lee's usual inker) inked JB, and in my opinion it's probably the best non-JB-inked job that I ever saw.

Seeing the pages reminds me that there is a small story behind them.

Bob Harras, then the X-Editor, called and asked if I could do six pages for
this issue. I was up to my eyeballs in work, so I declined. So he asked if I
could do three. I agreed, and they sent me a plot. I drew the three pages
and sent them in. Then Bob called and said "You drew three pages! That
plot was for one page!"

Woulda bin a real time saver if they'd updated me on that before they sent
me the plot!

Well, I for one am grateful for the mix-up! This one came out of nowhere, and nobody knew about it until the issue actually hit the stands. I remember my eyes bugging out when I first saw your name in the credits on my way home from school that day. And I remember hurriedly thumbing through it to see the pages you drew. Funny enough, I mistook the pages in this issue (pencilled and inked by Klaus Janson) before yours as your work for a moment, thinking something was "off" about them - until I saw these pages and thought "Ahhhh, there it is".

Edited: Ooops, I just remembered, Williams inked the entire issue, so that was Janson inked by him. A very interesting combination to say the least, since Janson usually only inks himself. That's why I had no idea that was him doing the art and thought it was JB at first.

Wow, was all that dialogue supposed to be for one page?
