I remember being really intrigued by Spider-Woman when I first saw her in
Marvel Spotlight back in the 1970's. When I was 11 or so, I was just getting
back into comics after riding a real wave of Tonka toys and GI Joes, and I
discovered Jessica Drew in one of those three-packs of coverless comics for
a quarter.

Did Infantino design her costume? Who was behind the creation of Spider-
Woman?

The second question I can answer.

Thru his connections in Hollywood, Stan found out that somebody -- Hanna-Barbera? -- was planning a "Spider-Woman" animated series. "This shall not stand!" sayeth the Man, and Archie Goodwin was summoned to create, literally over a weekend, Marvel's own Spider-Woman, and thus secure the copyright.

(A sidebar to this -- Archie really did intend for Jessica Drew to be an evolved Spider, courtesy of the High Evolutionary. It was this that scuttled Chris and Dave's plans to have Wolverine turn out to be a wolverine, via the same source. That was what they were setting up in the scene in 99{?} in which Logan reads as both a mutant and not a mutant.)

Jessica Drew is one of my favourite Marvel creations from the 70's and I still love that red yellow and black costume.  She was creepy and cheesecake sexy at the same time and my 11-13 year old self definitely appreciated that aspect.

Funny how some of Marvel's female creations from the 70's were created merely to secure a copyright:  She-Hulk and Spider-Woman.  I wonder if the same was true of Ms. Marvel?

Loved Gruenwald & Infantino on this serie, and also Claremont & Leialola.

Well now that makes a lot of sense. I never cared much for the character,
largely because she didn't seem "spidery" enough. She flies, and shoots
force blasts? How is that a spider?

That's interesting background information about Spider-Woman. Thanks, Mr. Byrne.

I think Spider-Woman carved out her own niche and became more than just a female version of Spider-Man. Her stories (at least the ones I read) seemed to focus more on the supernatural and had a different flavour to Spider-Man stories.

Just out of interest, did Jonah Jameson, in any title, ever comment on Spider-Woman?

I admit that some things about Spider-Woman's powers do not seem very spider-like at first glance, but it was good that Marvel tried to make her different from Spider-Man.  That makes the character even enjoyable today, she was not just a "clone" of Spidey.

If Jessica Drew was an "evolved" spider via the High Evolutionary's experiments, she would be a very interesting character.  But there is certainly the disgust factor.  I wonder how that would have worked out.

There's certainly a lot of interesting things about Spider-Woman's mythos.  There was a lot of potential there.  It's sad that the title just sputtered from one caretaker to the next until it's inevitable cancellation.

Infantino was surprisingly perfect on Spider-Woman.
His artwork lends a nice eerie atmosphere to the stories involving Broters
Grimm, Morgan Le Fey, the man who couldn't die, the Needle, and others.

Thank you, JB. I always wondered what the story was behind Wolverine "reading" differently than the other X-Men.
