Mr. Byrne,

Though I'm new to this board, I've been collecting for over 20 years.  Given your past experiences with the character, and her history, I was wondering....

If you were hired (forced?) to bring back Jean Grey from the (ahem) dead, how would you do it?

BTW, I do wish she would come back, I just don't see a way anyone could do it and make it not seem like a joke.

I don't know the details of her most recent demise, so I have no idea how to
undo it.

I've read the first three arcs of Astonishing X-Men and I still don't know the specific details. I just sort of "tune out" the Jean Grey stuff. She died in a classic storyline and the decision was made (right or wrong) to bring her back for X-Factor. Why couldn't Marvel just leave it at that?

Okay, here are a few:

Cyclops died, but was brought back to life in the next issue. Also, he doesn't need his visor any more.

Rosebud was his sled.

Bruce Willis is a ghost.

Boy, Live Free or Die Hard was even worse than I'd heard!

Jean's original "death" occurred in Uncanny X-Men 137.  She was brought back in Fantastic Four 286, about 5 years and 4 months later.  The most recent death happened in New X-Men 150, cover-dated February 2003.  Jean has now been dead this time nearly as long (within a couple of months) as she was the first time.  I haven't read New X-Men 150 yet so I don't know the details of this death, other than that Magneto (or a reasonable fascimile thereof) was involved.

…Jean has now been dead this time…

Neat summation of much of what's wrong in modern comics.

OK ... I'm a bit confused by this. I remember reading something a while
back on this forum to the effect that John had notes for at least outline
plots for issues of Uncanny X-Men extending beyond his actual run on
the title ...

So ... question for JB, I suppose:

In the event that you had continued on the title until the "natural"
conclusion of whatever those plots had held, how long was Jean Grey
supposed to stay dead?

Cheers

Jim
