I loved the characters so much that I kept buying the book for a year or so. Mignola's art was cool and creepy ... and completely wrong for Alpha Flight. It took me a long time to realize that the characters I had grown to love in JB's run had completely ceased to exist as written by Bill Mantlo. The characterization was just wrong, wrong, wrong.

At the time I was probably distracted from being disappointed by Alpha Flight because I was so thrilled to see JB doing Incredible Hulk, but then he unexpectedly left that book 6 months later and I was pretty much inconsolable.

Then I discovered girls and stopped whining so much about comics.

I got JB's entire AF run as back issues.  I tried a few non-JB issues but they didn't hold any interest for me.

Dropped it like a hot potato after JB left. Hated the artwork--and although I'm a big fan of Mantlo's stuff, I'm glad I skipped those subsequent issues after learning about what transpired afterwards.

I only bought Alpha Flight #29 to finish the story, and the 2 issues with JB covers after that. I also bought the annual with Gilded Lily, because I like the character. (unfortunately, the story was not good enough imo)

I read way into Mantlo's run hoping that it would get better, it didnt.

Alpha Flight ended at # 28 as far as I was concerned.

29 and beyond? They sucked.  I bought them out of habit, but they sucked.

"there were a few gems like the creation of Wanda Langkowski to get Sasquatch back"

You consider that a GEM?!

I stayed with it for almost another 100 issues. It was tough sledding and
even I eventually gave up.

When I read Byrne was leaving to do the Hulk I was horrified. I never
liked Taloc's inking on Mignola's short run on AF. I liked Heather
becoming Vindicator and the mansion from the Gilded Lily story
becoming their headquarters, Pestilence, Bedlam and even the Wanda
story.

Unfortunately there were many failings like Puck "really" being a tall
man, the characterization of Shaman and his becoming Talisman, Mac
returning with the same survival story as Courtney gave, Roger Bochs'
fate, the brown Box, and so on.

Edit to add: The worst problem was the cyclical nature of two things, the
AF joining with and falling out with the gov't and Mac's returns.

I dropped that sucker like a bad habit with #28.  As far as I was concerned, it no longer existed.  But then, at some point, Byrne did some covers for it and I decided to see if what was inside was as good as those covers.  It wasn't.

A little off topic but has anyone read Alpha Flight vol II by Steve Seagle?  It came out around 1998/1999.  I've never read it but I'm pretty curious about it.

Loved Gerry Talaoc.Loved Mike Mignola. I'm sorry to say Mantlo delivered less than inspired work. I did like Box suffering from the bends while being rocketed from the ocean floor to the surface.

I enjoyed the Wrath of the Dream Queen arcs !  Some of the new characters like Purple Girl and her friend (name?) who has an interesting twin were also enjoyable.  I didn't care for the Lan the Sorcerer arc.  He did some pretty disgusting things !
