JB...I was surprised that most of the recent Doom commission was done freehand. What about this one? And what did you use for the inks?

The inks on this are all different sized PITT pens, mostly Brush and Medium point. Everything is freehand except the mechanical elements (excluding Doom's armor) and the broken Daily Planet letters.

My signature bullet is done with an elliptical template, as usual, and a Fine point PITT pen.

Just received this in the mail friends...and as impressive as these commissions look on the computer, they look UNBELIEVABLE in person. And it's really a lot bigger than you expect.

I'm off to the picture framing shop...do any other commissioners have any advice or suggestions re: the best way to frame/display these?

Non-reflective, UV block glass -- or high grade plastic (lighter) if they have
it. But the UV block is most important, as it is for any artwork.

Fantastic commission, JB! I really wish you were writing and drawing this
company crossover.

Buddy (and Forum member) Paul Gibney made and interesting observation about this piece. Doom has seized control of Superman, and is manipulating him like a puppet -- but he might just as well have built a Superman robot, since the powers would not lend all that much of an advantage over the FF without Superman's skill and experience accompanying them. And Doom has neither.

So maybe Reed won't need that artificial kryptonite after all!

How 'bout Reed finds the 'frequency' Doom's on, turns the tables, and tells Superman to spin himself at super speed, shredding Doom's armor as his helpless human body hits a Mach # it wasn't built to withstand!

Nah.  Too much a clear 'defeat for one so wise as Doom!

That's the beauty of this piece. Doom has the ultimate weapon...but he doesn't take the time to understand it. He doesn't realize or utilize Superman's more subtle powers (like super speed). And that gives the FF a chance.

That leads to the ending...Clark breaks Doom's hold with the help of Reed, and then leads the FF to Doom's castle. Where Doom awaits them in his throne...as depicted in Jim's "The Doctor is Grim" piece.

... and all hell breaks loose.

Just got the framing finished on this piece...and it is now settled in it's proper place in my Russian Hill apartment. These commissions really do look even more impressive in person!
