Love the rubble!

Are you trying something different with Spider-Man here? His head has more of a JRjr quality to it than usual. In any case, I like it!

…the patented Byrne rubble…

••

Used to absolutely HATE drawing rubble. Then one day I realized the reason
for this was that I was penciling every detail, and then inking over it. Rubble
needs to be loose and spontaneous, so when I started laying down a few
jagged lines for "pencils", and then doing the real work in the inks, the
rubble not only became a lot better, it became fun to do!

John,

I can't recall now, but in your run on Spider-Man, did you always draw the webs as rope like, or did you tend to draw it more like the webbing that we see from many artists ?

Something struck me as different when I was penciling the piece, and I
found myself wondering if it was possible I simply had not drawn Spider-
Man's head from just this angle before.

Originally, when I was first assigned to a Spider-Book (MARVEL TEAM-UP), I
drew the same single line/strand that Ditko drew. Then Michael Golden
introduced the "spaghetti webbing" and other artists were quick to copy. I
cannot bring myself to go quite that far, but having a little extra weight to
the weblines does solve certain problems, artistically.

Looks great! Is this the first time Hyde has shown up in a commission?

Like what?  Is Golden the artist that pioneered the spaghetti(thanks for the term, I couldn't think of what to call it) webbing?

I'm seeing a "roundness" to your line again, Mr Byrne - sort of like your older 80s style.  I know I'd been seeing more rigid lines (in muscles etc) in commissions last year, but the most recent postings from you seem to be moving back to the "rounder" style.   I've no real way to describe what I'm seeing except say "rounder lines" and "straighter lines".

Am I just seeing things?

I REALLY like this piece -- I always like your CAP !!

Thanks to the commissioner for requesting this one.

There are always so many beautiful little details in your artwork that just keep giving more and more levels of enjoyment.  The constuction sign to go along with the bulldozer, the cement mixer, either the front of another dozer or a compressor behind and just to Hyde's right, the "I" beams and flooring of a building under construction.  Also, the way Spider-Man holds the flowing ends of his web line, the perfect perspective of the background buldings, and the way Hyde's body makes you feel him about to launch that bulldozer.

Is the constuction company name a personalization of this piece?  Have many people asked for their names to be worked into their commission pieces?

On Captain America's shield, you have made a metalic look for the red and blue parts.  It looks great, but is there a reason the white parts would not have a metalic look as well?  I think I understand, but I would like to hear your reasoning.

Not having to worry about what it's crossing in front of, for one thing.

On a black and white piece, I have found metal technique on the white parts
of the shield make them look the same "color" as the red parts.
