JB, it's interesting to see that you were able to create a truly alien-looking Romulus, without being (apparently) tied to what appeared in the Trek continuity from TNG and on, (including ENTERPRISE) :

(Nice, but a little too much Rome + Final Fantasy for my tastes... )
JB, if your version is what Romulus actually looked like at the time of 'Balance of Terror', does that mean you are the one responsible for erasing ENTERPRISE out of the Trek continuity? (JB as the "Future Guy"... *shudder*) ;)

My designs for Romulus were intended to fit the sensibilities of TOS --
channeling Matt Jeffries et al to the best of my abilities. From what I
have been told by the good folks at IDW, although ENTERPRISE did all it
could to undo TOS, and altho the new movie will most likely continue the
process, in the comics TOS remains as we know it, and it's that territory I am
exploring.

Starting to look like this will ship the month after ASSIGNMENT: EARTH
finishes, so October. First issue is done, less cover, as of this morning.
Here's another peek -- a slice thru the middle of a double-page spread.

Kirk: "Not too soon for me, to see the stars of... oh my... where did all these Romulans come from?"
It's good to see Romulans employing a little gunboat diplomacy.

Wow, a "Kobayashi Maru" from the way things are looking...
Flavio: "Vultures are circling... "
Kirk: "Bones, any ideas?"
McCoy: "Dammit, Jim! I'm a doctor, not a scarecrow!"

Not only is it the Enterprise, Sam, it's a scene TOS fans will recognize
when they read it!

What?!? A book coming out ahead of the original schedule? Surely that cannot be. No roses can grow like that... [add usual amount of irony for best flavouring]
Seriously though, good job, JB. Nice to know that the industry still have some professionals left who know how to act professionaly and all.

Great news that we will have a monthly dose of "Star Trek" titles for the rest of 2008.

The design of the architecture of Romulus was one of the things I loved about the first Romulans book. It looked artistic, as if the architects had made creative choices and then looked for ways to make that creativity into reality. Really showed a nice insight into the differences between Romulans and Vulcans. Much better than the TNG version as shown above, since that looks a little cold, sterile and ordered (which would be my criticism of the portrayal of Romulans in general on that show).
In other words it looked like Vulcan but with a different coloured sky.

Sometimes there is a MADNESS that comes upon me!
Last night I was looking at some of the screen-capture shots from
"Balance of Terror" on TrekCore.com, and I suddenly realized I had
completely misinterpreted one of the textures on the Romulan uniforms.
Not a patterned cloth, as I had gotten from looking at some of the TREK
books, but a heavy cable-knit. Must have been horrible to wear!
Hot as hell!
Anyway, this is me, so even tho I have finished the first issue of the
second ROMULANS arc, I knew my head would explode if I did not fix
this, so I created a new, more appropriate texture in Photoshop, and went
thru the issue replacing the extant texture where necessary. Ten pages,
about sixty panels, with scaling for figures at different distances from the
"camera".
Anyway -- here's a peek. You can compare this to the texture I used in
ALIEN SPOTLIGHT.

Very cool, JB: and what dedication!
Playing with textures like that in PhotoShop is very fun, too. Adds a note of depth to the final product, done right (as we've seen in your previous Romulans story).

I find myself doing more and more in Photoshop -- much to the chagrin of
Jim Warden, since this means less and less on the physical page.
Since going back to black gutters, for ASSIGNMENT: EARTH and ROMULANS,
I have even started "ruling" them in PS, using the eraser tool. Gives a much
sharper line than I can get with any pen.
