Okay, so yesterday New York City offered Al Qaeda and the rest of America's worldwide enemies the creme de la creme of targets for terrorism -- the Pope addressing 50,000 people in Yankee Stadium.

And nothing happened.

Nothing. Nada. Nil. Zilch. Zero. Zip. The Big Goose Egg.

Is it perhaps finally time we acknowledged that those lunatics who flew those planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon were the luckiest little terrorists in the world, and that this mob of disorganized, uneducated, religious fanatics shaking their sabers at us are not supervillains to rival Doctor Doom?

So much easier to go after unsuspecting, unprotected targets.

I'd like to think so.

Unfortunately, the human predator is the most dangerous animal on the planent.  I HATE to go Orwellian, but these people will always be a threat in some shape or form, but most likely not to the degree the current administration would have you believe.

Yes, but it could also be that the super-fanatic islamists' motivation had died out. My guess is that it could have died out. There were some fanatic communists here (not me) once and their motivation has died out. No apology, no we were wrong, it just died out. And then they can't recruit any more people.

I agree that they don't pose the threath most people make of them, but I believe the authorities should never "pull the foot off the pedal" when it comes to surveillance. The pope's visit was probably surrounded with the top of the top in surveillance and they didn't have that much time to prepare an attack actually capable of working.

Before 9/11 it was amazing the number of items people could "smugle" into a plain... considering that 5 or 6 guys with x-acto knives can highjack a plain, and one element could know to fly said plain, it was a matter of time before something like that happens. What amazes me more is the fact that they could coordinate 3 flights and the years of planning, how they could keep themselves below radar for YEARS! This things can naver happen again.

Nowadays (for quite some time actually) you can fit a nuclear warhead in the back of a truck, if parked in the "right" place it can do damages that could make 9/11 look pale by comparison. The authorities must remain vigilants and prevent them from organizing their attack, without organization they cannot do much...

My opinion anyway...

Don't think that... This guys are fanatics, worst they're religious fanatics! Their motivation won't die out and they won't stop recruiting people, children are probably being recruited as we speak... that's one of their strenghts they can wait, years if they must, waiting for people to ease up the security and when least expected they can acttack again...

Unfortunately, their luck was of a such a stupendous degree that its going to take a long time before they cease to be an effective boogieman.  Those towers going down and the clouds of smoke chasing New Yorkers through the streets are seared into the minds of all adult Americans.

The terrorists are all focused on Iraq now. The one saving grace of the Iraq war is that it took the terrorists' focus off of attacking US soil.

That's like saying "I blocked his punch to my gut with my face."
