Genes wife Adrienne has posted this on their site
Gentlemen:

"My darling, sweet, handsome and brilliantly gifted husband's liver is
failing. The complications are very nasty. This week it's fluid
rentention and encephilitis. He's on powerful meds now to deminish
the symptoms. He sleeps alot and has very little energy. He wants
you all to know how badly he wanted to attend the convention. He so
seriously wanted to see you all and shoot the breeze.

Not sure how long we have left together, but our family whole and
we'll be taking this sad journey together and nearby.

anyone with commissions outstanding, I'll have a sense within the
next couple of weeks if he can fulfill them, if not, please don't
worry, I'll return your monies promptly. I don't want to pull the rug
out from under him. But if he can do anything, he'll need to finish
the 10 pgs. remaining on his 38 pg. Captain America Civil War for
Marvel.

You all know how you've enriched Gene's life by coming forward and
being a part of his. :

love,
Adrienne"

Yet thats not totaly unexpected. His health have been average those last few years if what i read is exact.

At least for now he is still alive and may still have some good days ahead when he'll recover.

Not a young man anymore, but there's still some hope.

Very sad. Recently read some of his DD. Also, I listened to an interview where he was in high spirits talking about his career.

I'm sending him a card.  His art kind of took an odd twist with me.  When I was younger I did not like his style, but as I got older and saw some of his pencil drawings I realized this man could draw his ass off, and that ink does not do his pencils justice.  I hope Marvel is not busting his chops on the remaining 10 pages that's left on the Captain America book.

Best of luck to a great one.  I've enjoyed his art over the years.  Terrible news.

Here's his web page:  http://www.genecolan.com/home.html  A good amount of his art as well as posts from Gene that make you feel like you know a little bit more about the man. Like some here, growing up I didn't "get" his art, but as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate it more and more.  It's amazing what he does with light and shadows, arguably the best in the business in that department.

My well wishes go out to he and his family.
