See, this is a perfect example of what drew me to JB's work in the first
place - a strong sense of naturalism that ran through his 80's Marvel
work (as well as his first Superman run). That opening sequence is so
spare, and beautifully written.

Perfect economy of language - but the details of the shaman's wardrobe
are what give the whole thing an indelible sense of verisimilitude.

The most beautiful part? The Hulk never throws a punch. Understated,
but with a real sense of the power of the character. The calm before the
storm, and many writers and artists then and now only give you the
storm.

Stuff like this was a gateway drug to alternative comics in the 90's.

Love the headshot page.

Hey, I just realized that Keith Williams wasn't involved in this one!

Question to Mr Byrne --

Easier or Harder to tell a full story in just splash pages (obviously with more writing in the boxes) ?

It just struck me.....I must add to the list of charachters that JB does better than anyone else....

Giant-Man

just that monochrome floating head on that one page blew me away.

I found this one a few years after getting JB's Hulk run, and it proved to be quite a hidden gem.

Was this issue slated to be the one following what was technically JB's "last" (319)?

I like that this cover gets to be the cover for the HULK VISIONARIES.
