...maybe Alpha Flight was just a great team meant to fight the X-Men and
nothing else...?
••
That would be my vote!

For one thing, they're a team that's not a team. You basically get to
see what happens in their lives as they intersect occassionally and
stand together (briefly).
That's what I loved the most about the book. You never knew which member would be featured and how he or she would interact with the rest of the cast in the next issue.

I'd like to see what Alan Davis would do if he were allowed to pick up where
JB ended...

On the other hand. . . !!

I would say Mantlo is the only guy who truly just didn't "get" Alpha. I baled less than 10 issues into his run, but his treatment of Puck, Heather, Shaman & Talisman (coulda been more...who remembers) was just dreadful.
After that, who even worked on Alpha Flight? And the two reboots since have clearly NOT been JB's Alpha Flight...rather other guys looking to make their mark. I don't think they ever WANTED to get Alpha.

I created a thread earlier this year called "slaughtering alpha flight" - that listed everything Bill Mantlo did in only 2 years to simply "kill" this series.
edited to get the name of the thread right

Hi JB,
Were they created for that reason only? Thanks!

But that would seem to imply that not even you got AF right, which is something most, if not all, of us here would disagree with (you, after all, set the standard for what made AF right). The question wasn't "why can't anyone get AF right" it was "why can't anyone but JB..." etc.

The twins are really elves.
*************
Really? What, due to their ears, I guess? Were they mutant elves?

No, just elves. According to this page, the elves angle was introduced to take the place of a development that was (rightly, imo) disapproved. Not to say the elf angle was any good either.

One of JB's many talents is taking characters he doesn't really have a great love for and still create great comics. Alpha Flight and his few Legion stories he's done being something that comes to mind right away. They call it being a pro.

I think I liked the original story better.
