Just finished reading this one. Another great issue, and one that ties into the backstory of the A: E concept well. My only quibbles are a few lettering errors, such as Roberta being referred to as "Mrs." Lincoln, and "interference" being spelled "interferance".
(Some inviso-text spoilers below...)
We finally get to see Agents 201 and 347 and learn the details of their deaths, which is a neat touch.
And, judging by the coloring differences, it would appear that Gary Seven's bosses are a different race of the same species that the bad guys come from.
Oh, and the Isis backup story was really cute!

Not sure I want to think about how they reproduce! Still, kudos for creating truly alien-looking aliens, JB!
There's no way those aliens could have been shown satisfactorily in a live-action episode, had A:E become a TV series, however. One can only wonder how 1960s-era techniques would have brought them to the screen! They probably would have looked like bigger versions of the Horta, or something along those lines.

Another top notch issue! I liked how the interior of the alien ship was equally alien to the design of their species.
One question: what's with the license plate on pages 14 and 15? On page 14 it matches the alien alphabet and on page 15 it says "N-MEN". Huh?

Sorry my fault, I did not know there was supposed to be other lettering on it
.. It will not and did not happen again. Will fix for the trade.
Your lowly colorist..

Tom, if you survive the exploding gift basket JB will be sending you as a
'thanks' for what you did there, perhaps your recovery will be aided by
reading what the folks at Trekweb had to say about your colouring
in their online review of A:E #4.
Think of this as me sending flowers to the hospital prior to your arrival...

Some nice touches here. Liked how the motel manager and the world's oldest grandpa were shown in the background pointing at Seven and Roberta. A very realistic reaction to finding strangers in your room.
Roberta finally calling Mr. Seven Gary at an appropriatly emotional moment.
First two pages were light hearted and fun.
Great use of two throwaway offscreen characters from the TOS: AE episode.
Love me some Isis. The end feature was unexpected and was a treat for Isis fans who didn't get to see her human form in the main story.
Can't believe only one episode to go for now...I wish it was on that weekly schedule a certain wall crawler is on now.

Ouch!
But, at least I can say that, baring unforeseen eventualities, there will
definitely be a second ASSIGNMENT: EARTH series next year.

Whoops...well, I won't be trying out for Wheel of Fortune :)
When I went back to look at that I found some more nice touches like the letters missing from the Continental Breakfast sign. Love those kind of random real life details thrown in there.

But I want one now! :) Especially after issue three's epilogue.
Issue 4 was great though. I enjoyed the little extra story too.

This is favorite series right now. I think this has a potential to continue on and cover a lot of interesting terrirtory, so I am really glad to hear that it's going on.
I agree with the Trekweb review. Everything fires on all cylinders with this issue. It's fantastic to read a comic with this degree of tight stortelling matched with enough fun for the Star Trek afficiandos while being engaging enough on its own for people like myself, who aren't as steeped in TOS history.
I like how Seven and Roberta's relationship clicks in this one - it feels like these characters are in synch with each other right off the bat with that wonderful opening scene. It's a rare treat for a story like this to have a sequence that gives me an actual laugh, but the wardrobe opening is genuinely funny. It reminds me that JB has earned his comedy chops in my book with "She-Hulk" and it's good to use a dash of humour between these two. Great stuff.
And as the Trekweb review says, hard to talk about this without revealing spoilers. That's the sign of a tight story.

It's been a good exercise -- which I will be continuing with CREW -- writing these
"single episode" stories. Of course, I only have about half an hour, as opposed to the
full hour of series TV (at least, the series from which these derive), but that just forces
me to trim that much more fat!
It's an interesting contrast the the ANGEL series, where I have four issue to tell one
story (albeit in "chapters"), and am therefore allowing myself a more leisurely pace.
Not exactly "decompressing", but letting myself start perhaps a little less deep into
each scene as I might otherwise.

Issue 4 has been my favourite to date. I thought it was the first to really open up beyond the 'confines' of a TV screenplay and merge the Assignment Earth concept with the special effects advances/scope of later Trek series. I experienced a frisson not felt since the early years of DC Comics' Star Trek series. Thanking you, Mr. Byrne.

So....what was supposed to be the "other lettering" on the car's license plate? The only reason I even noticed it was because of the alien characters in the one panel. I figured that meant something and then it switched to "N-MEN".

Those aren't alien characters. (Why would they be?) Just space filler.

OK. So I guess it was just a normal license plate. The space filler was similar enough to the alien alphabet on the same page that I guess my mind made a connection that wasn't intended to be there. I tuned into the alien dialog since it was introduced on the previous page (I guess). Then when I saw the "N-MEN" it just drew extra attention and I thought I was supposed to be seeing something in the license plate. Here's why colorist (I'm assuming) shouldn't do things like that. Distracted from what was really there and made me wonder what was going on for no reason.
What the heck's an "N-MEN" anyway?
