I just finished the second volume of the original "Magnus the Robot Fighter" put out by Dark Horse. It was a great read, Gold Key put out some great books. Have always loved Torok, and now Magnus is up there. Magnus was written well, and the art was spectacular. The images of
the future were the cool things that had always been promised as a kid:
robots, flying cars, gadgets, ect
Anyone else have any Gold Key Favorites?
Why do you like them?

I came to love the Gold Key stuff later. I really enjoyed Magnus, Turok, and Star Trek from them.

Magnus was far and away my favorite, and Manning's Tarzan adaptations
were, in my opinion, superior to Kubert's and Buscema's, although his take
on things is a bit too "clean" for a jungle lord. I liked Doctor Solar before he
got his costume, which made him a third-rate Captain Atom. Try the Occult
Files of Dr. Spektor and Dagar, the Invincible--I may have mis-spelled both
of those last two. See if you can find any of the Disney Scarecrow of Romney
Marsh stories by the great and highly underrated Dan Spiegle.

I'm a fan of Turok, Magnus, and Dr. Solar. Gold Key's Star Trek books were pretty good, too.

Due to the terrible distribution in my part of Canada when I was a kid, I had
exactly one issue of TUROK, SON OF STONE, but it was one of my favorite
comics. I must have read it a hundred times or more.*
I was there to pick up the first issue of DOCTOR SOLAR, and managed to find
several others after. That was a fun book, so very different from the superhero
stuff I was familiar with from Marvel and DC.
MAGNUS, ROBOT FIGHTER was a source of great frustration to me. I had a friend
who bought it regularly, but I could never, ever seem to find it on the stands, and
he could not be cajoled into parting with his, even as loaners. So I could only read
them when I was visiting his house. (I'll bet no small part of my fascination with
robots was born of this "forbidden fruit" aspect of MAGNUS.)
*Checking the GCD listings, I find that the single copy of TUROK I had was 17,
published by DELL.

Until i had settled on the Monster theme for my collection....i wanted a JB commission of Magnus fighting a JB robot!

I love The Occult Files of Doctor Spektor. The art is great
(Johnny Santos I think) and I like that Spektor's just a guy, not a
magician. Plus there's the fact that he sometimes wins by just
wacking the bad guy with a shovel. Only recently did I complete
the series and just reading it start to finish is something that I'm
looking forward to.
I'm also looking forward to seeing what Dark Horse does with the new series.

The only one I could ever find was TUROK. Which really was all I needed as a kid! Dinosaurs and Indian Braves? Nothing finer.

Dr. Spektor is great, as is Dagar the Invincible. Both were by the team of Don Glut and Jesse Santos. Glut had his own little mini-continuity going... Dr. Spektor was the descendant of Dagar, and they both fought the Dark Gods at different junctures. Dagar was a very well-done sword and sorcery book, and aside from Conan and Warlord it was the longest-running sword and sorcery book of the 70's. Santos did some beautiful artwork, and I'm surprised he didn't catch on at Marvel doing Conan after Gold Key went under.

The few STAR TREK comics I read before JB's work were published by Gold
Key.
