I know you've said that you're pretty much a Hartnell man, but have you seen at least one story with each of the Doctors? Any choices for second favorite? Third? I find it pretty hard not to love Patrick Troughton, myself.

Actually (!!!) I have said I am a Pertwee man! (Doesn't that sound as if it's British slang for Gay?)

I have seen most, tho by no means all, of the Pertwee episodes, the first year of Hartnell, all the Tom Baker
episodes, a handful of Troughton, and almost none of the post-TB Doctors until Eccleston. "Almost none"
being here defined as one or two of the Colin Baker episodes, and none of the others.

(Incidentally, the other day Chris Ryall at IDW asked me if I would be interested in doing any DOCTOR WHO
projects, and being a Pertwee fan, and given that the timing is right, I immediately suggested having Gary
Seven and Roberta meet the Doctor and Sara Jane. The BBC, alas, nixed this one.)

Especially hearing it in a Monty Python-esque voice.

"Oooh, such a pert, wee man!"

JB, that would have been ~awesome~.  I'd think you'd be great for the 3rd Doctor.  Though I figured Paramount would have also put the kybosh on this idea two.

Nothing is rushing to mind. Alas, I was immediately told "no Daleks", which kinda kills about 90%
of the DOCTOR WHO stories I would be likely to conceive! But, the seed it planted, so I am sure
something will come along eventually.

I always wanted one of the other incarnations to meet Susan and see if she still calls him grandfather :)

Huh, so you've never seen any of Peter Davison? He's interesting; he's sort of a harbinger of the younger, more antic versions of the Doctor that we see on the current series. Davison was 29 when he was cast in the role and he brings a nice, tense energy to it. He does not, however, have even the hint of a romantic involvement with his companions (not even Adric) even though his age would have lent itself well to it. The Doctor's relatioship with the leggy beauties populating the TARDIS was still very much hands-off at the time (which I have no problem with).
As for Troughton- I love him, but sadly "a handful" of episodes are all there are with poor Pat in the role. Most of them, as you probably know, did not survive the seventies. The BBC is always attempting to track down lost episodes and creating restorations using animation and the surviving original soundtracks, but it's a little sad that my favorite Doctor has so little out there on the DVD shelf. Troughton does steal the show from every other Doctor each time he returned to the series, however, so I'll always have that.
I'd rank Pertwee pretty high myself, probably right below Eccleston and Troughton. Any rough idea of what your "top Five" would be, JB?

I love the first 4 incarnations of the Doctor, with my favorite at any given time depending on my mood at what I've most recently watched.  It is a huge shame, though, not just that most of the Troughton era is lost, but what remains isn't the best during his tenure.  I mean, The Abominable Snowmen, Evil of the Daleks, Fury from the Deep and Power of the Daleks are gone, but we've got The Dominators and The Krotons?  Oh, and thank God for the recovered episode of The Underwater Menace.  : /

Still, I highly recommend the BBC audio releases of the missing 1960s stories.  Some stories will break your heart that they're lost.  Others, not as much!

Martin Arlt.........................................

Who would run, not walk (okay, drive fast) to the comic shop to pick up any JB-produced Doctor Who comic!

Oh. I can understand the BBC's position. There are just SO MANY ways a
crossover like that could be messed up. I mean, can you imagine the
explosion of anuses on both sides of the aisle if even something as
inconsequential as this acknowledged (or even merely suggested) that
DOCTOR WHO and STAR TREK exist in the same universe??

Can't think of any reason she wouldn't. The 10th Doctor has even obliquely
acknowledged his family history.

(What I'd like to see, on some dim and distant day, is the BBC officially
shutting down production of DOCTOR WHO for all time, and showing us, in
the last episode, the "last Doctor" morphing into a young William Hartnell!)

Generally I avoid lists, but since this is entirely opinion based, and so cannot
be "wrong" in any real sense (and keeping in mind that there are some
Doctors I have not seen at all), I'd say. . .

Pertwee
Eccleston
Tennant
Baker (Tom)
Hartnell

Hm, would a Doctor Who/Avengers (Steed and Mrs. Peel) cross-over "work" in your mind, JB?

EXTREMELY MINOR TWENTY-FIVE YEAR OLD SPOILER WARNING:

Susan encountered future versions of the Doctor in the 1983 story The Five Doctors, James. She really only exchanged dialogue with the Fifth Doctor in that one, but she did not call him Grandfather, despite being fully aware of who he was. Then again, the First Doctor was standing right next to her the whole time, so maybe that would have been awkward. Look closely when Susan is first introduced to the Fifth Doctor. The actors have fun with it; they exchange a quick flirtatious look.

JB, have you seen the most recent season yet?

It's understood that there is now 'another universe' with 'another Doctor', though neither will appear again any time soon...so presumably, any DW/STAR TREK crossovers could take place 'over there, in that place of which the BBC dares not speak.'

I believe that, at this point, it's only in the old Virgin New Adventures that Susan isn't considered to be the Doctor's granddaughter.  The 10th Doctor has certainly refered to his family before.  "Fear Her" I think it was.

Didn't Peter Cushing play the Doctor at some point? How does he fit into the scheme of things?

Cushing starred in the two big screen Doctor Who's.  They were based on the first two Dalek stories.  They had nothing to do with the regular series.  Completely different world.  In the movies the character's name is actually Dr. Who and he's a regular human.  Very successful for the time.

All of Pertwee's are available on DVD now.  Some of them have a mix of color and black and white eps, but at least they all exist!

I remember reading that the only reason we have season one of Dr. Who was that they found some reels hidden behind a wall that had been constructed over a storage area.  It's really too bad once you see how much of the show has been lost.

Someone said about the number of missing Doctor Who episodes the other day was around 160.
Amazing to think we're missing almost as many episodes as a show like Friends ever produced!

Yeah, it's like seasons 3, 4 and 5 are almost all missing.

And I don't think all of Pertwe is availble on DVD, at least not here in the States.  It's certainly all availabe on VHS.
