Micheal Phelps is not a superhero. Yet he's almost 8 heads tall.

Made me wonder what the "ideal" proportions might be for a superhero, given that non-superheroic humans can have such high ratios.

8 heads tall is considered "normal". Superheroes tend to be 9 or more.

Here, I've always worked on something more like realistic proportions (7½ heads for most adults).  I guess I wouldn't be hired by most publishers of superhero comics these days, anyways.  I didn't know that they upped the ante from the days when Stan Lee and John Buscema mentioned the "8 Heads" rule in their How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way book.

Same here!! i've read How To Draw Comics The Marvel Way book. and for the longest time i've been lead to believe that Superheroes were at least 8 heads tall, and normals were 7 heads.

Only the other JB could make a man in a cute summer skirt look dangerous.

Curiously, Big John seems to have reversed the proportions there. . .
