This page also brings me some memories related to the spanish edition.
The letterer got confused with the names of the characters, and misplaced
a couple of them. Each time I read the issue, I couldn't avoid to take a
look at it, and it was very frustrating. I was shocked that the letterer
couldn't differentiate between the characters because he lettered the
comic for many months!

The spanish edition was THE worst edition I ever saw. They didn't publish
the original covers (they used new painted recreations), translation was
"creative", lettering was amateurish and sometimes they modified the
ballon in a clumpsy way to fit the text, etc.

When I could get an original copy and I compared both editions, I felt
very outraged about how they ruined these comics that I loved.

The best part was that it was published in black and white, and I could
enjoy the fantastic work by Terry Austin without distractions.

This lousy edition made me to realize how important was a decent
lettering, and to build a minimum knowledgement on the work you are
working on it. It's questionable how much a good lettering can add to the
artwork, but thanks to this edition, I realized the power of a bad lettering
to ruin the artwork.

And I've had in mind this conclusions all my career while doing graphic
translations of comics for spanish publishers.

I would love to own a piece of original art from JB's X-Men run and his FF
run, but I fear it may never happen on my salary...

(and I don't think they're over-priced: they're more than worth every penny--just out of my range)

There are a few great Kane Marvel monster title covers from the 70's that I"ve seen colored as well.  Argh!  Was that really necessary?

I never cease to be amazed by what people will do to original art to,
presumably, make it "better". Coloring is bad. Having someone ink pencils
is at least as bad. Especially when we so often see really wretched ink jobs.
"I got this cool Neal Adams pencil drawing, and my friend asked if he could
practice his inking on it. Looks cool, huh?"

Well, no. . .

"Roger told him if he could find the same page for less anywhere at the con, he would beat that price. The guy went off in search of the bargain pages."

****

Oh, that slays me.  That is one for the time capsule.

Wew!! You scared me, Gerry!

This makes more sense to me. If you want your piece colored, do it over a
copy, not over the original!

Edited to add:

If you type "Steve Oliff" in the search machine of CAF, you'll find more
artwork ruined.

Warning! It could hurt your sensibility!

The coloring on that Wrightson piece makes no sense. The light from the
lamp, falling on Victor's sleeve, is darker than the sleeve?

Reminds me of a screwup in the first issue of GENERATIONS, in which the
separators messed up Trish's beautiful coloring by having Batman casting a
shadow that was lighter than the wall on which it fell!

In effect, when you touch the origianl art in anyway you are tampering with comic history.

BTW, JB, what is the difference between a colorist and a separator?  The credits boxes on many a comic book have caused me much confusion on this matter.
