Nate Piekos at Blambot.com revealed a project he's been working on. A font
for Tom Batiuk.
It's not for sale though. Ah well.

Have any of you designed a font? How long does it take with modern tools?

Back in the day, it used to be Fontographer for creating fonts* ...
and it took forever.
Typography is a subtle, delicate art and appears deceptively simple. It's
not. Designing a set of upper and lower, as you'll find in most free fonts
floating about, is not that hard. Once you get into ligatures and
kerning pairs and all the obscure characters in a set, it becomes a quite
different proposition!
Cheers
Jim
* It might still be - I haven't done it in a while.

I started with FONTastic and moved up to FONTographer, but it's been a
long time since I played with either. I created about a dozen hand-lettering
fonts, about half of which I have used in the comics I've worked on. Since I
don't do my own lettering any more, not much call for them.
I know! I'll send one of the comicbook fonts I made to Jeff and he can
convert this whole site to read as if hand lettered! That shouldn't get old too
fast. I mean -- no more than thirteen minutes, anyway.

I followed the same route JB did: Fontastic, then Fontographer, for hand-lettered style fonts. But that was back in the early 90s.
Don't know what the kids are using nowadays.

I also used Fontographer when dabbling in font making. It still exists
but is effectively on its last legs with the latest update (a PowerPC Mac OS
X release) coming in 2006.
FontLab Studio appears to be the replacement and compatible with the
current OS releases.

I for one hope JB letters a future project. I really like the font.

I've used both Fontographer and FontLab -- I prefer FontLab. I usually don't build the fonts directly in that program, but rather use Adobe Illustrator or some other vector based and then import/copy it into FontLab. As far as length of time for font creation it varies based on complexity. Script fonts take more time in my opinon than san serifs or serif fonts -- even that isn't always the case. Planning saves a lot of time I usually do a pen a paper version of the font so I can work from that. It helps to have a scanner as well so you can work from the comp version digitally.

I always wanted to have a font of my handwriting. Started to play around with it 10 years ago and gave up quickly ... too much work!
