I bought the first three color collections at a book fair in highschool. I read them, got to the end of the third one.(and the massive cliff hangr).
It was about a year before I found a copy of the fourth one and that year... really kind of sucked. I think Marvel was reprinting it in a family friendlier version that was also in color (though it was in four color instead of the painting like color in the collections). Of course as a monthly with bits of new art it did not help my year of pain any.
Before I bought the collections I had seen the original "larger than other comics" B&W issues around, but the owner of the book store that carried them in Barton Creek Mall wouldn't let me look at them because I was not yet 18. Oddly he WOULD let me read/look at the Grendel, Cerebus, Badger, Grimjack, 2000AD, and Nexus comics.
Not long after that I found Austin Books. The owner of that place you let me read Cherry Pop Tart or anything. He just didn't care. That's where I first started reading B&W comics like Cerebus, Bone, and several Dark Horse titles..
For some reason I never really liked the stuff that came after the fourth ElfQuest collection as much as I did the first four.
