Wow.

Y'know it's always a little weird (and fun) to see a Constitution-class ship other than the Enterprise--sure, it's the same design, but it's not The Enterprise. Same equipment, same look, but different ship and crew.

I lean toward the notion that the Enterprise is something special rather than being "just another ship"--which she was in TOS, of course. For me, the mission seen in TOS was what made the ship famous later on (as the subsequent series indicate). Sure, any other ship might have the same design, but, to quote Altman's M*A*S*H*--it "just doesn't...quite...make it.".

One of the things that drew me into early Marvel was the scale of the characters. When Stan, Jack and Steve were starting out, they very deliberately made everybody "smaller" than their DC counterparts. Marvel characters were not the biggest, the strongest, the fastest, or the most handsome. They were just simply the coolest.

This carried over into my watching and coming to love TOS. I really liked the idea that there were 11 other ships (as eventually revealed) like the Enterprise, all with captains and crews off having their own adventures. (Some may recall I have often said I sort of wished TOS was more of an anthology series, rotating thru the different ships from week to week.) I didn't need Kirk to be the best of the best. In fact, I rather preferred that he wasn't!

Oh, and since this is me, after all, the tweaking just doesn't stop until the
thing is published. . .

++++++++

I suppose my thoughts on the matter are partially informed by the fact that TOS wasn't an anthology--and the Enterprise was the one ship out of 12 that was deemed by the TV gods as the one we got to see, if that makes any sense. The other ships may be just as good or just as fun, but none of them are the one the series was about.

Intreresting piece, Mr. Byrne, I never thought of the women officers wearing pants for the classic era this far in but come to think of it Number One did as well as cadets from Pike's era--  so did Yeoman Smith and Dr. Dehner.

I'm wondering if the woman we're viewing is an experienced Number One on the bridge?

••

The ladies in the second pilot were wearing uniforms left over from the first, tho the pants did persist as part of the female uniforms even after the first actual episode brought in the miniskirts.

(This unfortunate lass gets aged into an old lady in the next shot, with a pan up from her legs -- which is probably why she was wearing slacks! Still, there's the precedent!)

Charlie X would be one upset individual for Kirk to have to deal with if he escaped his captors!  Make the Wrath of Khan look like a walk in the park.
If you think about it, the Star Trek universe is one scary place for us mere mortals.  There are many, many powerful races out there.  Who knows what is really going on in the universe or multi-verse you could say.  Kirk and crew faced off the Organians, Metrons, Trelane and parents, Apollo,  and other's I can't think of.  It's almost like us humans are way at the bottom of the Space travelers pecking order and there is much to learn and be wary of.

I must say I'm really enjoying the dialog on this series. When the one
crewman complains "7 8 9", and the captain comes right back with a zingy
"10 11", I just about bust a gut.

I can't wait for this.  Looking at the tunic insignia, I'm trying to figure out which ship this is. The closest that I can find is the insignia for the U.S.S. Exeter.  However, the version shown in the artwork has a little thingie at the top.  Assuming it is a Constitution Class ship, I am guessing  It is a ship that were never saw on screen before.

She's the U.S.S. YORKTOWN, as the ever-scary Greg Kirkman deduced from
her registration number, NCC-1717.

Yep. I see it now.  According to some sources, Yorktown will be renamed: Enterprise NCC-1701-A!  A slick little bit of continuity!

Those sources are wrong.  The U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-A was a new star ship not a used ship renamed from another.

I read somewhere that it was a renamed ship that had a
Japanese sounding name. I think it might have been in
Starlog's official magazine for ST IV.

Several sources have suggested the NCC-1701-A was another ship renamed, mostly by way of explaining how it could get built so fast. Now, me, I really have no problem with the idea that in the 23rd Century we should possess the technology to be able to throw a starship together in the time it takes to press a couple of buttons -- but others seem to think otherwise, and so we have the Yorktown "explanation".

More to the point, though, is that Yorktown was one of the original
names of the ship that Roddenberry was going to use before he settled on
Enterprise.

Which is why I chose it for Old One's (Or, more correctly, Middle Age One's)
ship.

Kind of assumed that -- didn't clue in to that being who the captain was,
though! Awesome!

You didn't name her, did you?

The previews for Scism look great! I can't wait to pick this one up.

I apologize if this has been mentioned before, but how many issues is this mini-series? Is it another two-issue series like The Hollow Crown?
